For my year, 2004, there really wasn't any percentage in getting an "S" since they both had the same 315 horsepower.

I notice a lot of these other sports cars have bigger engines and a lot more horsepower, e.g. Charger, Corvette, et al

I have a lot of confidence in my 996 taking the turns better but in general, how do the non-turbo 911's compare with the other sports cars in a straight shot?

I've been trying to look for a site that lists 0-60 for all cars (like kbb lists hp, torque, etc. per car) but haven't been able to find one that's easy to do comparisons with.

 

 

Most people are just going to tell you if you bought a Porsche for straight line driving you bought the wrong car. That being said I believe 0-60 for the standard 996 c2 coupe was about 4.7-4.8 seconds..

 

That is why a lot of people will run 60 to 130. On a track of coarse.

 

what would the 60 to 130 be? on average

 

I don't understand what this means... no percentage in getting an S??? By percentage, if you mean a gain in horsepower, then you are correct. The C4S and the C2 use the same engine. However, the Carrera 4S (the only S model available in 2004) has many other differences, including suspension, brakes, wide body, some unique styling, etc.

I agree with some of the other comments. Porsches aren't really made for straight line drag racing. They are quick, but they aren't optimized for this type of performance. That guy at the light next to you in a Corvette will smoke you...

Not sure about smoking you... but i know what you mean. in a straight line I find these cars pretty good, especially if you know how and when to shift.

Now if you are talking about a ZO6... then ya.

Most races are not fought on the track or on winding roads. The most likely scenario is car A pulls alongside car B on an open stretch of road, they take off until one is clearly ahead. This is also done at stoplights when there is open road ahead.

The turbo is really the car to get. It has both the maneuvering that Porsche is known for along with enough acceleration that can compete with the big boys.

That's true. If you want straight accelleration, there were many different better choices to go for and the turbo being a good one.

Are you that much into street races? I hardly ever have the chance to and it's not a very smart idea either. Not only that, if you know what RPM to be in at certain speeds, these cars have very good launches on the move... it would only be for a few seconds until the next traffic light creeps up.

 

you may have purchased the wrong brand of car as well. The new turbos with PDK can get from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds (under 3 seocnds with the right modifications) but that really isn't the rationale behind owning one.

It's sounds like raw hp & torque are your thing so you would have been best suited with a Z06 or a GT500.

 

My 04 has 345hp but then again I have the 40th edition that comes with the X51 package.

 

In my experience, 0-60 times are completely irrelevant. The time you should really be looking for is the 120-65 times
