Great ride...sounds like your having fun already. The 996 has all the DNA of the orignal "901".

some scary IMS stories, but its' good to understand what I'm getting myself into.
If your thinking about doing the LNEng IMS upgrade make sure you take a look at the comment in “101 projects”. For Porsche’s after 2002, when removing the IMS the cams may skip a chain tooth. The cam alignment should be check after IMS upgrade.

I knew I'd love this car, but I didn't realize how much ! I can't stop driving it.

Btw I'm pretty sure I do not have PSM, not that I care but I though all Porsche's did?

I bought my 2002 Lapis Blue C2 a year ago. 5000 miles on it now and a big grin on my face for each of them. Enjoy! I love your interior color, it looks great against the blue.

Not all 996s have PSM...if you have it there will be a button on the left side of the radio to turn it off.

Join your local PCA (Porsche Club of America) and you will meet some great like minded people. Most have drives and meeting/greets once a month.

They just are, and here is the 40th Anniversary model (note the badge Porsche affixed to the tail from the factory).

They are according to Porsche North America marketed, but it's not really a 911 unless it's a 911, which ended MY 1989.

I'm a bit late to the welcoming party....welcome to Rennlist, the home of PORSCHE enthusiasts.Hope your daughter enjoys many more miles with her Dad and his 911, or 996 or whatever you want to label it. They are all a lot of fun whether they pump water or air regardless of what the badge says on the rear. Congrats.

Nope, the 996 REALLY IS a 911. Porsche may have stopped using 911 as the internal model designation after MY89, but it does not change the fact that the car they refer to internally as a 997 is the current-generation Porsche 911. It has a lot more to do with the lack of interchangeable parts between the 996 and the previous cars than any desire to make it sound like the 996 isn't a real 911. Until MY89 the internal designation matched the official model name of the car. This not being the case anymore doesn't make the 996 any less of a 911--it only means that enough parts have changed that is necessary to distinguish the old ones from the new ones.

When normal people talk about a Porsche 911, they're not referring to Porsche's internal model designation--they're referring to any of the cars Porsche calls 911 from the 1960s to the present day.

The people that say the 996 isn't a real 911 tend to be snooty folks that look like the guy below.

So how would we know if you were talking about a 1989 911 or a 1989 911 which are completely different.

This is a photo of my daughter on our ride home from picking up the new car. Yep, this is my little cancer survivor. Guess what she wants for her 16th birthday? guesses?

She looks a little giggly in that picture and reminds me of my daughter...take good care of her, and of the pretty car behind her!

I'm sorry to be riding this 911 vs 996 horse all over your thread.

Let's get the priorities straight...you and your daughter deserve to be happy. Porsches are just one great way to enjoy life.

Take care of that daughter and give her whatever she wants. I'm choking up just thinking about it...seeing as I have young children too. She looks lovely.

*****

Now, about the 911 vs 996. I don't look like the guy in the pic (yet) and you would never accuse me of being snooty. I am however familiar with every Porsche model built from the 901 to the 997...and the 996 is not a 911.

As I said - that's not a bad thing! It is however true. I love my 996. At the moment I love it more than I did my 911. It's a fantastic car.

Yes, the marketing department insists on calling the car a 911, and I guess to some people, whatever the marketing guys say must be true. But I work with marketing guys, and yeah....they will tell you whatever they think you want to hear if it means making a sale. Please don't tell me that this is news to you.

A lot of us here though hang out in the engineering department both literally and figuratively. To us the car is clearly a 996, in this case it's a MkII 996. The stories wouldn't make sense otherwsie (ie - "I replaced the coolant tank in my 911." "Oh really, that's weird?"

As an example....I'm not much of a dog guy (I prefer cats) but if I did own a dog, and I was telling a story about how my dog was snagged and torn to shreds by an eagle to another dog guy, I'm pretty sure he would want to know that it was a "chihauha" and not a Great Dane.

In your world you'd say, it's a dog, they're all dogs.
