Don't worry. If you get caught flying the car you'll get hazed enough from the cops.

That said, I agree. You (we) do not have a 911, but having had both I can tell you that's not a bad thing.

Face it guys, 911s are air cooled and have torsion bars, and they're like a little dinky things with upright windshields. They don't have power steering and the smell like oil and/or exhaust and ......they're air cooled!

Our cars are are badged as Carreras, and all the part numbers start with 996. Only the marketing dweebs call them 911s, and for all the wrong reasons IMO.

But that's ok !

You my friend have a nice car - and as a guy who doesn't know the difference between a 911 and a 996, you will enjoy the 996 more...trust me.
??? really? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_911 and yes, Im quoting wicki, but the 996 is a 911. :-)

thanks for the warm welcome to the community. Looking forward to meeting some of you in the Bay Area some day as well. I love that owning this car seems to be much more than just owning a car, I had no idea there was this much passion until I found the board.

I will admit that the board is also scary, because this is where you hear some scary IMS stories, but its' good to understand what I'm getting myself into. I am considering a 3 year Fidelity warentee just for peace of mind while I take over ownership of the car. the previous owner kept it in mint condition, but I'm planning to actually drive her much more than she's used to.
It's not a car, it's a religion.

IMS failures is not as bad as it may sound. You just need to catch it before it fails completely. Seriously, putting roller bearings inside an engine has NEVER been a good idea.

They will make a lot noise and start to leak before exploding your engine.

Haha - ok if Wikipedia says so I guess I stand corrected

And no, the 964 and the 993 are also *not* 911. That's kind of the point.

That was that last to have the internal code name "911". However, the 964, 993, 996, and 997 are all "911's"

They just are, and here is the 40th Anniversary model (note the badge Porsche affixed to the tail from the factory).
