996 Short Shift

I also wanted the underside mount and couldn't find one. checked w/ B&M and they said it was not all that popular..... Ended up buying a factory 997 but have yet to put it in ... All comments say it is the best choice and of course it's still factory....

I had just finished typing a thoughtful and amusing reply and when I hit "send" it disappeared and told me I was not logged in. WTF?! Does this site time-out or what? Is my unsent quick reply saved in here somewhere? jvm

The undercar short shift kits were sold by B&M, Ruf, Techart and 9ff. I think at least Ruf's is still available.

My question is this:
What are the pros/cons of the "underneath" kit, rather than the usual one installed from within the cabin? That is, if one can still purchase the former from somewhere.
It would be good to get some input from someone who has installed the less known kit that installs from underneath the car.

Look here:

The main advantage of the undercar transmission mounted SSK is that it's adjustable for 3 different levels of shift reduction from 30% - 15%. The console mounted SSK's shift reduction is somewhere in the middle.

"Smackboy" is right and From my reading of past comments here the under-car shift mod is very simple to install, can be removed back to stock, no pulling apart of the console AND does not change or reduce the sideways movement at the shift lever. In otherwords going 'across the gate" remains stock reducing the chances of hitting the wrong gear. Some here have called the console in-car shortshifters "notchy" for this reason. The one I tried felt fine and even more positive than stock. Going into Ebay with "short shifters porsche" netted 2 pages of shifters priced from $45 (Likely China knock-offs) to $500. The undercar ones were B&M an individual listed for about $150 to an absurdly priced "Tech Art" at about $500. For a simple drilled and tapped block of billet? Not for me, thanks. I ordered the $45 one to try. I'll let you know...... jvm

I've installed the undercarriage B&M short shift kit and paired that with the standard 997 shifter, and I love it.
The reason that I went this way was because I kept hearing about how the B&M Console short shifter was notchy, and how the 997 shifter was much smoother, as well as you could adjust the throw on the below carriage SSK.
