Default Fister, PSE mod: Stage I or mild Stage II: need specs

Folks-

2002 3.6 Carrera, 6 speed, bone stock. Factory original mufflers.

I have my cans dropped and am ready to go with a DIY Fister / PSE mod, and have a local RL / PCA guy to help. (Thanks, Chris.) I need help getting the specs right.

FYI, yes, I have spent hours reading up on this on RL, as well as the other two: RT and 6Sp.

WHAT I WANT:
1) a more mechanical sound, but not much louder at idle;
2) not much, if at all louder than stock at low rpms;
3) transitioning to some bark, but not wake the neighbors, above 3000 rpms;
4) not crazy at higher rpms;
5) overall, more aircooled and mechanical, and less eggbeater.

WHAT I DON'T WANT:
1) loud when I leave the subdivision at low rpms on an ice cold engine at 7:15 AM;
2) annoying loud at mid-range;
3) drone;
4) wake the dead loud at high rpms.

I am 49 years old, not a track junky, and just want to bump up the old school, mechanical component of my engine's song. Increased decibels are mostly a negative. Increased sound quality is the plus. If the sound "note" I want costs me a significant increase in loudness, I don't want it............

So, what do you folks recommend? (anything will be TIG welded stainless...)

1) muffler cap/nipple to outlet at the same diameter as the factory exhaust;
2) variant, e.g., 2" hole in can cap/nipple to 2.25" or 2.5" pipe to outlet;
3) 1.5" inlet to outlet;
4) larger pipe inlet to outlet?

Leave it alone completely because I don't want a ton of extra noise,and that is the tradeoff for better sound?

Thanks for any input.
-Mawgie / David

FisterD Stage II is ALL of what you want and add NONE of what you don't

I just did my 40th AE and it sounds just right to my 45 year old ears.

3) is slightly louder than 1) or 2) (I can't remember with diameter I had)
4) 1.75 inlet-outlet is fisterD size.
I had 1)/2) nice growl but wasn't loud enough and went to 3). 3) was perfect in everyway...no drone etc etc but wanted a little more. I went off course and went aftermarket but hated the drone so I went 4) FisterD 1.75. I think it's perfect. This is my final exhaust setup(I also have 200 cell cats)

+1

The Fister D mufflers are awesome. Most people who haven't heard my car before assume that this is the way a 911 is supposed to sound in the first place.

never met anyone who was upset doing the Stage II Fister D - absolutely quiet at cruise... perfect growl with throttle and a tad bit of bark at WOT - NO DRONE, no ricer kid crap.... sounds like it should no question about it

you've gotten great help (from Chris) and good advice from everyone. I would recommend shipping the cans out to Darin.......he is super, does great work and you will LOVE the sound......as a matter of fact you will have an ear to ear grin, all day long!

I know Darin would do great work. Just can't stomach packing, lugging and mailing my mufflers a total of 6,000 miles for an inexpensive mod that can be done within 20 miles of my beer fridge....

I sure don't mean to hijack Mawgie's thread, but it seems so pertinent to my situation. I just brought my DD 2003 C4S to the shop, and they found that the right muffler was shot. Cost to replace that muffler alone with OEM Porsche is about $1,000. The tech at my shop (Alpine Autowerks) suggested that I go with an aftermarket exhaust system, and initially recommended that I go with Fabspeed. However, after reading this thread, it would appear that what I am looking for is the Fister-D exhaust.

I want a nice "supercar" sound, but without being so loud or obnoxious that it draws too much attention. Reading the descriptions above, it sounds like the Fister-D would be a good choice. I have also read the thread started by the Australian guy who did not like his Fabspeed installation. Sounds like the consensus above is that the Fister-D is a good sound that is fun, but not overly aggressive.

On the Fabspeed side, the one that appeals the most is the 996 Carrera Valvetronic Maxflo Muffler System, because it offers more control over the sound.

Thoughts?

The Fister D mod has universally acclaimed sound and is dirt cheap. You can troll the 'Net for a set of 3.6 cans, then have them modded.

I have read that Fabspeeds with a Fister hack sound great, w/o drone. Much more expensive, though.....

I sent mine to FisterD just over a year ago and they sound perfect. Sure, a local shop might do a similar job for you, but I really wanted Darin to provide his handiwork, and he comes across as a person who is very interested in making his customers happy. I whole heartedly reccomend his work and enthusiasm.(I'll be 61 this summer)
