Karen,
I have enjoyed this 2002 black beauty for six months now and have yet to be disappointed. I recently gave it a Meguiars cleanup to remove the small swirl marks and it is even better than these photos. What are you going to do with your collection?

Thanks "geetee"... yes, Ann Arbor, MI - Go Blue. When did you live here? Winter is much too long these days and we are suppose to get more than 15" of snow tonight. Counting down until April which is when we have reasonable weather to take it out of the garage as you well know.

Heidorn, geetee: Go Blue!
Here is a black car which, if all goes well, will be joining my stable on Saturday. Many a slip twixt the cup and the lip, though, so I've gotta play it .

"geetee" & "Invikuis" good to know there are other fans of Michigan on this board from Ann Arbor area. Nothing like driving Huron River drive to Dexter with the top down (or up if you are in a coupe) and along the river with an accelerated speed now and then. Great winding road and the only problem is the 35mph speed limit. "Inviktus" great looking car and good luck getting it into the stable on Saturday with all the snow coming. Hope all goes well in your pursuit...

Black cars almost seem like a life style. I spent a stupid amount of time keeping my Arena Red 993 clean....I couldn't imagine what I'd go through with a black car. Nope....I want a car about the color of dirt. It will never have the presence of a black car, but I'll get to drive it.

LOL - nothing worse than a summer day with plenty of "stuff" (read grasses/pollen) in the air... you spend all morning on the car and its dirty before you get it inside the garage having not driven it yet....
but then again, that "dirt" flies off at speed

I'm moving from a Silver to a Black car ... so I'm reading this thread with a bit of car care trepidation. Going to need to step up my game.
There are some truly beautiful cars on these pages. Just curious to hear the cleaning/polishing process that you guys go through (and how often) to get that liquid shine?
Few quick questions.
1) My "fear" is swirl control. If you are careful not to create swirl in the washing process, how often do you find yourselves having to use a swirl removal product?
2) Any suggestions on a good swirl control product?
3) Do you guys typically use random orbital buffers to apply product, or just elbow grease.
Love to hear any tips on "keeping it liquid looking" from the Army of experience out there! Thanks.

- Use a two bucket wash/rinse approach with a Grit Guard in the rinse bucket.
- Wash and rinse one panel at a time (clean the wash mitt with the Grit Guard after each panel). Work from top to bottom...wash the front bumper and lower rockers last.
- Obviously do not wash in a circular motion...wash front-to-back as the air flows over the car.
- Use something like an Air Force Blaster to dry the car - not towels
As for removing swirls (they will eventually show up especially on black) the process is something like this and would need to be done 1-2 times per year:
- Wash/dry
- Clay Bar
- 1st step Polish (aggressive enough polish/pad to remove swirls)
- 2nd step Polish (less aggressive polish/pad to remove marring from 1st step polish)
- Cleaner (in order to remove all polish residue)
- Wax or Sealant (I would recommend Sealant on black as it should offer longer protection against swirls)
For polishing, a rotary buffer is the preferred professional method but it is difficult to use and you can burn edges of the paint if you are not experienced in using one. Most weekend warriors start with a random orbital buffer. Flex has an excellent random orbital that has a good amount of power but is also easy to use. No fear with burning the paint with a Flex. Then you will need a set of polishing pads (see Lake Country) and polish (see Meguiars).
