Hi guys,
Did a search on transmission oil but not much on it. My car will be going in for a service soon and was thinking of changing transmission oil at the same time.
Any tips and/or suggestions on what oil to use? Is it ok if 2 different brands are mixed? Inputs about this would be very much apreciated.
Are there any signs before a tranny gives way?
Cheers

OEM.
I've had the 5-speed fluid in my 02 Boxster changed now I forget how many times and each time it has been at a Porsche dealership's service department and factory fluid is used.
238K miles on the original transmission.
Went to have the transmission fluid changed in my 03 Turbo's 6-speed and a transmission leak was found (not the fluid's fault, bad seal) and Porsche replaced the transmission. (Under CPO warranty, thank Goodness.) But I was going to have the OEM fluid used. I've put nearly 20K miles on the replacement transmission (transmission is just fine thank you) and the car's due to go in next week (waiting for my Boxster to get out of the shop -- it went in a few weeks ago for a camshaft actuator solenoid/camshaft actuator R&R) for a clutch accumulator R&R (again thank Goodness for the CPO warranty!) and at the same time I'll have the replacement transmission's fluid changed.
With OEM fluid.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Oh signs of a transmission about to give way.
The signs vary and a bad transmission may not exhibit all of them. A few might not exhibit any and just catastrophically fail, but these are rare though more likely of the car is treated to clutch dump drag starts, speed shifting, or has a heavily modified engine.
But generally: Grinding when upshifting/downshifting; popping out of gear; difficultly selecting 1st gear (or any other gear) with engine/transmission up to temp and engine idling and clutch fully depressed; noises; fluid leaks; hard to pinpoint vibration.
Sincerely,
Macster.

I put swepco 201 in my car a month ago and it was an improvement over the old gear oil. I have since swapped it out for Mobil SHC/Delvac and I find the Mobil to be a bit better than the 201. (Mine is an LSD Trans, no friction modifiers were added to the SHC)

I went into NAPA to get Redline 75W-90 for my trans oil change and they had Valvoline Synpower on sale ($8.99/qt). They didn't have Redline, so I got the Valvoline. It's GL5. Anyone use this? It's gotta work good. Right?

NOTICE
Use of unapproved ATF or transmission oil:
- Excessive wear and damage to transmission parts.
- Reduced service life.
=> Only use the ATF and transmission oils listed below when topping up or changing ATF or transmission oil.
Approved Transmission Oil:

Tip transmission:

A96/50-150 - 999.917.227.00 (or previous ATF specified above)
I know this is 996 forum and not a 996 Turbo forum but the above shows Porsche specifically approves certain manual and Tip transmission fluids and axle fluids and cautions against using any not on the approved list.
Why one would choose to go against this is beyond me.
No way one is going to save enough money to have on hand should a transmssion, Tip, or final drive require replacement due to using a non-approved fluid.
Sincerely,
Macster.
