Default PSM or No PSM in snow - what works better?

I drive my C4 all year round up here in the great white north and have a set of Blizzak LM 25s (bought used). Most of the winter driving has been in wet or dry road conditions, with limited snow. However, yesterday we got 4" of the nice light fluffy stuff and I decided drive the car to see how it really handled in the snow. Here are my observations
  • PSM "On" made the car hard to drive as it was intrusive. With it off, I found the car predictable and far easier to control, especially when going sideways
  • ABS seems very sensitive. It would pulsate even without an impeding lock up.
  • Turn in is was slow and the car really wanted to go wide, especially when PSM was "On"
  • Overall, the car did not feel as surefooted as it did last year

Does this mirror others' experiences in deeper snow or is my suspicion that the tires have come to the end of their useful life (despite having decent tread left) perhaps valid?

I turn PSM off when the roads are snow covered. It makes the car easier and more fun to drive. I have Blizzak's as well, and the same experience with ABS.

PSM can be a PITA because it can slow your momentum in deeper snow instead of just letting the tail wag out a little. I often turn mine off while reminding myself that it's not that big a deal because PSM is never completely off and that it will re-activate itself if the sensors detect that I'm slipping and I tap the brakes.

I think it depends on how and where you are driving. Generally, I find the PSM to be too intrusive. The PSM system in our Cayenne is far less intrusive - it will allow you to swing the rear end of the car out, and if you catch it on your own, it never makes a peep. If you let it go just a little too far, it will kick in and save you. The PSM system in the 911 "corrects" you almost immediately, which takes some of the fun out of it. If I'm just driving in town, I tend to turn it off. If there's any driving above 50 mph, then I keep it turned on.

Zookie, It looks like Toronto got the same thing as here....

The mall cops came by and told me to stop playing in their parking lot... I just went and found another one

It also makes the car slightly understeering. Without the PSM it's easy toturn the car with rear wheels too.

+1

I also can say that 911 is very predictable and easy car to drive on snow and ice, looong slides are just fun...

PS. Yokohama IceGrip iG30 studless.

I think PSM is for when people don't want to think driving or have trouble driving in adverse conditions. When starting my car in the morning hitting the PSM button to turn off the PSM is second nature.

Here are some shots of my car having fun, in a photoshoot I did last year after a day of skiing.

I have more pics in my "Hai Guyz" thread where I introduced myself and subsequently had the thread locked.
