Default Water pump

Hello folks..,

Yesterday i took off the water pump on my 994 C4 2000.
That easier then i tought . The last bolt on the water pump is not easy to reach but once you onbolt it the job is done.

I also decided to use the original water pump seal (from the Porsche dealer) and not the one i received with the new WP.(not the original one)

Now 2 questions...

Do you think it would be a good idea to use a sealer with the gasket seal

How can i screw the 10mm bolt to the good tork without a tork wrench. How will i know that i reach the good tork with just the use of my 10mm wrench.

Thanks in advance

Robert

Some use sealer. I didn't when I did mine last year. I just used the OEM metal gasket.

You only need 7.5 foot/pound per bolt for the water pump. Not much at all. Torque the others to get a feel of the force. Then approximate the last one. I actually torqued my bolts to about 9 to 10ft/lbs. Main issue is to not over torque these bolts.

Could you do a 1/4 turn past snug? Don't know what the proper torque is.

Couple questions though....
1. Why did you take it off? Leaking?
2. Why did you re-use the gasket? Instead of the new gasket?

I'm sure the wrenchers here will help out.

Why not buy a torque wrench? For any automotive work almost one of the 1st tools you should own.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I think the issue he is facing is getting to one bolt, sounds like he plans to torque them all and is wondering how to reach that one....

right?

do you have a crows foot? (I have not see one of these done in the car...guessing)

Getting them all even and not too tight is the important thing here. You are threading the bolts into relatively soft aluminum and if even slightly over torqued can irreversably damage the threads in the motor case. Sometimes a good measure is to use an easily removable high heat thread locker. This will assure that proper torque when applied, which in this case is very low, will hold the bolts from not working loose. The locker will also help prevent any leakage if any of the threaded holes are not blind. Sometimes a thin smear of a non hardening sealer is advisable. It helps to fill any small small scratches or voids in the case or pump casting and assures a joint that will not seap or weep.

Thanks folks...,

For Pete of corse i bought a new gasket to replace the old one and i bought it at the Porsche dealer.(metal one)

I will try today to find a small torque wrench to torque the bolt at 7.5 foot/pound.

I will let you know when the job complete and by the way yes i changed the WP because it was starting to leak.
The pump was the original one...not bad for a 10 years old car
Thanks to all

I just bought a Crafstman 0-75 ft-lbs torque wrench from Sears for $24.99 since I needed one for some pulleys replacement on wifey's BMW. You def need one for your car DIY projects...

I just watched my water pump get replaced. Didn't seem to be any sealant from the factory. The tech made sure that the mating surfaces were clean, but didn't use any sealant for reassembly. No leaks.

Did your tech use a gasket?

Did you examine the blades for missing pieces?

For you folks....,

The car has currently around 60K on it and no there were no missing pieces on the blades.

The water pump looks still in a perfect condition and the bearings in it are still perfect( no grinding sound).
The only thing was a small coolant leak at the bottom of the WP and the problem was the gasket.
As the gasket is steel fabric the gasket with time get rusty and leak.
Of corse i will not use the old WP but this one is still in a very good condition.
Bye Bye
