Update, the tech can't find where it's leaking from.

They've cleaned everything and sent me away to keep the car for a few days before coming back to see whether the oil seepage can be traced to its source.

So I'm going back on Monday. They've ordered a gasket from which they think it might be leaking from.

BTW, it's transmission oil and not engine oil. Phew.

well good, they are on it.... trans oil (tip?) dont know anything about them maybe a vent is plugged or during a serice so they could sell it some tech over filled it??? could be that simple (lets hope)

Eh? Do you mean there is a possibility that the transmission can also blow up :-)

So apart from RMS/IMS now transmission as well?

"ish" meaning that I haven't run into a leaky transmission so I hope it's a easy fix. I would have preferred to have heard that a hyraulic line is leaking..... Best of luck. And FYI I'm not a doomsayer, I like these cars.

Another update.

The leak is coming from where the 4WD system and transmission are connected. To fix this they have to drop both the engine and transmission.

I have asked the SA to get someone to check on the RMS/IMS seal. Is there anything else that can be done while they have these out?

FYI, everything is being paid for by the Sales team as this is a recently bought car, and under the New Zealand consumers law, they are responsible for faults for an appropriate/reasonable amount of time.

yea, if you go thru all that trouble dont just check the IMS seal, replace it ...... and the bearing

also swap in a new AOS - trust me, this will need doing soon enough and it is easy with everything out

Might as well do the spark plugs, clutch set (if you have one) check the oil fill tube, check the MFG date on the expansion tank, water pump - you should be good for many miles then

So let me get this straight:
1. Replace IMS seal and bearing
2. New AOS
3. New spark plugs
4. New water pump

Remember these things won't be paid by the dealer as they are not failing items, and my wife won't be pleased if I spend too much $ on the car.

What will be the most important thing that should be done.....

1. Most say IMS bearing is most important since its failure means engine destruction.
2. AOS is air oil seperator and it has tubing, valving and a body that can fail. Since its at the front of the engine and the engine needs to be pulled out for the tiptronic cars to replace the AOS its a good thing to replace.
3. Not a new water pump but the water tank and cap to the top left side of the engine. Tank and cap might of already of been replaced. Some tanks after time crack. The original caps used to leak after a while then a replacement cap was designed to fix the bad design.
4. Spark plugs is just an idea if they have been in there a long time. Mine were almost seazed in there.

For what would be covered.
The RMS if leaking
The IMS if leaking or it shows sign of a little looseness or wobbling.
The AOS if showing signs of leaking.
The coolant cap and or expansion tank if they are the faulty variety.

Like they mention the items if they can be changed out will allow more years of not worrying about problems from these areas. Then you can worry about varicam parts and guides plus lifters mushrooming or any other little thing you care to worry about.

The engines like their oil changed every 5k miles or so and most are happy with just that.

Coolant cap definitely needs changing, but doesn't need the engine to be out.

So if IMS, AOS show signs of leaks then they need to be replaced, otherwise they can be left alone?

I'll have a chat with the SA tomorrow and get costings etc.

I'll also try getting the dirty details of the problem.

Car is 2003 C4 Cab, tip.

its not just the coolant cap - its the entire expansion tank and with the motor out its cake to change - they crack and leak

the AOS is like $150 now or 5 hours of shop time ($140/hr locally for me) plus the $150 when she goes (oh and if its like the car on the rack last Thurday.. a 150 mile flatbed towtruck fee... not sure what that set the owner back $$$$$)

The IMS is about $600 for parts and about $18K locally when (IF) she goes - not going to start any fear, just saying I would change it when the chance is right... and your chance is right

beats not doing it.... that car on the rack Thursday, that was flatbedded in from 150 miles away... AOS failed... had a new clutch put in at a dealer only months before. Dealer never "suggested" any additional work???? now the guy is facing a tranny out for the second time a few months - yes the AOS can be done without tras removal, but we encouraged the owner to get the IMS upgrade since it would only be a couple hours additional labor and make the AOS an easier job - turns out the IMS that came out was black around the outter race, an indication of what we think is heat from lack of grease and maybe a sign of things to get worse quickly. if the owner left the IMS bearing I plan to stoot pictures of the inner surfaces so we know what's going on. I will know soon if he left it for us
