I got ahold of the local preeminent powder coating vendor: they do lots of custom motorsports and high end manufacturing parts. Real deal. $130-140 rim, soup to nuts in a standard color. This is with chrome scuffed as opposed to bead blasted. The company recommended against full on bead blast as it can upset the composition of the rim. I really liked the sound of the guy I spoke with, and their gallery of completed products was very impressive.
Still, after a tire unmount, fuel for delivery, purchase and tax costs, then remount, I will be into this mod for about $900, and, if anything, the powder coat will probably have no effect or even diminish the ultimate resale value of the rims. Accordingly, I am inclined to run them for awhile, and try to find a sweet set of 18" take offs, when and if they come around....

I am partial to the "Carrera" rims
The best pictures of Porsche rims I have found is:

I have no affiliation with them

See post #11.
These are VERY RARE wheels and cost a fortune if purchased new from Porsche. They were standard on the limited ed. 2000 996 Millenium Edition of which only 911 were made and sold as 1999s (Europe only) and 2000s in the US. Less than 300 Milleniums came to the US in 2000. These rims are not actually chrome plated in the traditional (electro-plating) sense as Porsche has never recommended chrome plating of alloy rims. There was an article about the special process in Christopherus Magazine. If I recall correctly, the rims were flash plated with copper or something then followed by a powder coat, a very thin flash coat of chrome and finally topped with a clear powder coat. The supposed advantages were that this process was much lighter than traditional chrome plating and wouldn't embrittle or weaken the alloy wheels. I'd suggest selling these rims to someone who has a concourse-quality 2000 Millenium Edition 996 rather than messing them up. AFIK there is no real US source for restoring these rare wheels if damaged and I had heard from someone that Porsche will sell you a new one, but only if you turn in the damaged wheel. Good luck.

It's been said above, but here's more fuel to the fire. You can find hollow spoke TT silver wheels for 750-900 every once in a while either on the classifieds here or the 6speedonline ones. Here's an example I saw a couple days ago. TT Wheels.
At these prices used, it's hard to justify spending any money stripping your currents ones.

Not to hi-jack this thread, but, CLB, can you tell me about the rear spoiler extension? Kinda what I am looking for...
To pay homage to the original poster... Save the rims and pick up some aftermarkets... Or sell them. I recently got Victor Equipment Racing Innsbrucks in black (my car is black) and they look nice. They make them in silver with a red logo insert (even though the Porsche insert fits) and I think they look sweet.
I did some homework and from what I can tell, they can be a bit heavy but decent strength. Since I am not tracking mine or DE or anything, they worked for me at a reasonable price.
Good Luck,
JKC
