Shell rotella t6
Hi! Just got a 2000 996 a few months ago and ready to change oil and filter, car has 99k miles now. I've done some research about oil and I'm leaning towards using 5w-40. Saw a jug of Shell rotella t6 5w-40 for $19.50 from local walmart. Has anybody use this? TIA.

Welcome pecto
I have not used it but offer one piece of advice. Replacement/rebuilding of your motor in your new sports car would cost ~$20k. Are you sure you want to trust the cheapest oil you can find to protect it?
Not to start an oil thread, but I would suggest something much better - and that is my opinion.
Post a few pics of the car, would love to see it

Shell Rotella T6 is a full synthetic oil formulated primarily for Diesel engines.

Thanks for the welcome Ivangene! I will take some pictures as soon as I get the chance. Actually, I was looking around for Castrol brand but stumbled upon this shell t6. As I recall, it says it's fully synthetic and at a low price, hence my curiosity striked me. But I definitely agree, I wouldn't put any motor oil that is not approved and compromised the motor. The engine btw was replaced about 40k miles ago by Porsche, previous engine with cracked cylinder head. Got the car for a very low price.

awesome!
I know sometimes oil is very inexpensive and its a great idea to stock up when you can. I used Q Power in my 996 which was hard to find. I looked at those big jugs at Walmart too and thought... maybe.... but never bought any because I just didnt know for sure. IIRC they have Mobil 1 and many people say that is good. If you can save a few bucks on the labor of the oil change, spend a few more on the better brand oil - again, not dissing the rottella, I just dont know.
where ya from?

Beentherebaby thanks for the link. T6 seems to be a good oil from the read but not too sure if appropriate for the m96. But boy, I just didn't realize how dizzying it would be to choose a brand of oil for the motor. I used to own a Boxster and dealer would supply me M1 0w-40 and I was fine with that for several years until I read about m96 issues. I'll be sticking with 5w-40 though.
Ivangene, I'm currently living here in southern CA. It's weird though, been a member here for 5 years and first post today. Awesome site though!

Porsche recommends Mobil 1 0W-40 for your car. It has more zddp formulated in it for Porsche's along with their 5w-50 for the older air cooled cars. My 996 has 91,000 on it with this oil and zero engine issues. Although I respect LN the report does not go into detail as to why a high viscosity rating is good or results to this method. The more frequent change intervals I do adhere to.
I would also not change from the oil the engine has grown up with, if you know, as it is doing very well with it at 99k miles and it might not like a change at this point.

Just to chime, I did a whole lot of research yesterday when I was buying oil for my newly rebuilt 944 engine. From what I gathered, Rotella T6 has 1200 ppm ZDDP whereas Mobil1 0-40w has 1000 ppm. Just something to consider.
