Chris:
I've got to say that you're my hero. I sit in my luxurious highway cruiser, with the rosewood dashboard and the full leather interior, and I look at the pictures of what you did to your cockpit, and long for the white faced gauges, the silver center console, the aluminum pedals.
You did it up right, man. Now I know what I am going to work towards over the next year. Did you get an exchange for your instrument cluster or did you have to buy it outright? How did you figure out how to take it all apart so you could redo it?

went to ship item he dropped it and broke the face cover. I told him I only
wanted the silver gauges and he sold the item for $20. Dismantling the
gauges is fairly easy. There are several places on this form that talk about
how. I had done the same on my 2000 996 but is somewhat different for the
2002 996.
PIC from this form:
My object is to stay original with all upgrades, that is using OEM Porsche parts
only and what is an option for that model year. Though I did put a 997 airbox
in, but it looks so much better that the original 996 box.

When you changed out the gauges, did it also change out the digital readouts that show mileage? If it did change out the digital display, did you get a different reading or is the mileage of the car stored elsewhere than in the instrument cluster?
I love the way your cockpit looks. I just need to figure out if I want to spend $1,000 updating mine, or take your step and learn to paint. I've only had my car for 2 months, and I already have a list of "birthday presents" that will keep me in the poorhouse for a while.
Decisions decisions decisions.

Did you have to remove the needles to be able to put the new faces in? How are they held in place? Was changing out the faces difficult?
Sorry for all the newbie questions, but I'm trying to figure how much trouble I'm going to get myself into if I do this myself. I saw that someone is selling white "decals" that will stick to the front of the gauge faces, and give the same result for small dollars. It just needs perfect alignment to have it work out.
