Sorry I cannot help with you question on LA FM stations. I am up in Northern California. Regardless however, I have not been happy with any FM modulator clarity vs direct input. Have you considered buying an XM input kit.

Contact Becker. Let them know your year model, radio type and what device you want to connect. I cannot recall the amount but it was well under $100 for my 2001. Make sure you get the "keys" from them as well to allow headset removal.

For details check this older post. It gives some details on how to run the cable after it is plugged in. It was for an IPOD but description sounds like my XM Aux connection wiring:

If you call and ask them to "try" it they will give you a month or two free. Also, don't but the sales pitch after the free period call and ask to cancel even if you want to keep it and they will offer you a discounted rate I pay about $80 a year for best of XM (i.e. everything but Stern and Playboy)

Two good sites to find a frequency for the FM adapters...
http://www.sirius.com/fmlocator
http://elecurls.tripod.com/fm-free.htm
I like the second one better as it shows a graph of the strength of the nearby signals and lets you know which are good, great, and best. For example, by me there are two listed as best. 96.1 and 100.1 are both very clear, but 100.1 has a few very strong signals near it, which leaves me with 96.1 with only one strong and one medium signal nearby.

Thanks, Brucechas, this validates my decision...and in the meantime, before getting the direct input as was suggested, I did tune my radio to 101.5 and it sounds pretty good! Much better than before...thanks, savowood!
