Default Recommended Paint for Wheel Hats?

Just about to venture into the Caliper paint mod and while I'm in there I'm going to redue the hats. What have you guys been using for paint? Dupli-Color Caliper Paint for the Hats too? I plan on brushing everything to keep the mess down! I'm painting the Calipers Red and the Hats Silver. Any recommendations appreciated.

Thanks,

Hey Rob,

I used Wurth wheel paint (silver) it holds up well. I also I believe it only comes in a spray.

Regards,
Stew

Plan on brushing it on due to the time required to prep for spray. Hoping less mess too!! Thanks guys.

I just use light grey primer, works like a champ.

If you remove the rotors to spray them, that is the easiest, but it you want to do it on the car, just mask of the front of the hub and the caliper. No need to worry about masking the rotor as the first time you step on the brakes, all of the rotor overspray will be cleaned right off, and you will have a nice cut line on the hat.

I used Rustoleum hammered silver (brush on). Lasts and lasts, and is easier than masking the whole front end for spray!

I did the same as Andy - followed his recommendation and have had the same experience - looks great and is lasting really well. It's easy to brush on, requires little masking and levels out to a nice finish without brush marks.

Those of you who used Rustoleum hammered, how is it holding up (now that it's almost 2 years later)?

Also, don't you need to turn the rotors a little by hand to clear the caliper so you paint there? Even with the the car in neutral and the parking brake released, will one of the rear wheels turn if the other rear tire is still on the ground? I think since these cars don't have limited slip, that should work, no?

I prefer VHT flat black engine paint (see avatar), but my wheels are black.

Make sure to scruff them up a bit with sandpaper before painting.

I used the rustoleum hammered silver as well, still looks as new after a few years, but it probably only has 4-5k miles, and nothing real aggressive that would generate significant heat either.

I recently changed my rotors, but they still looked like new after 2 years. I would highly recommend this method.

Thanks for the reply. So, is it possible to turn one rear wheel while the other is still on the ground?
