CV boot cracked or brake fluid.

What 911SLOW said.

I can add that if brake fluid it will wash away with water. If grease it won't.

Be aware too that car tires encounter a lot of stuff on the road and some of this stuff can end up on the wheel liners and such. More than once I've glanced at my car's wheel wells and spotted what I thought was a brake fluid or grease leak and it turned out to be something I ran over (and I make it a point to not run over anything).

You'll probably need to get the car in the thought to be thorough and inspect to see if you can spot a leaking brake fluid line or a split/torn CV boot.

Sincerely,

Macster.
