Just do the IMS Solution plain bearing and be done with IMSB for good. A few hundred bucks more is nothing compared to the rest of the rebuild.
+1 on the IMS Solution...but if you decide to not go that route but with a replacement bearing, your dealer should warrant both the install and the Porsche part, not necessarily so if they install a non-Porsche bearing.
Picked up mine today post-IMS solution install. Got the warranty card & unfortunately couldn't keep the old one due to the warranty submission requirement. Eh well

My 996 is an '03 C4 Cab with 38k on it. I've picked the LN single pro - unit which has two rows. I'll feel great about it and then, most likely, if I still have the car, have it done again, at about 80k miles.
Yesterday we prepared to remove the IMS on the car in order to replace with an IMS update kit. What I think is strange is that my car is a 99 yet seams to have a flange for a single row IMS and not a dual row that supposedly come on all 1999 cars.
Here's a picture. Today we will be removing the actual bearing. Is this a single or dual row?
That flange looks like the one that came out of my 2000 C4 tip cab, this week, and it is dual row.
My car has 137k on the clock and I decided to have her serviced for the last of the 3 PM issues. I had the AOS done at 100k and the waterpump done at 125k. My Indy installed the LN upgrade.
Some other WYAIT items like a RMS, chain tensioner and what not. Bill at EPE did the work and as usual I am delighted with the quality of service and fairness of fees.
The shadows in the pic are playing hell with my perception of it. Sometimes I look at it and the depth looks exactly like my dual row and other times it looks too deep.
Turns out my completly stock 1999 Carrera built in late 1998 has a single row IMS Bearing. I dont know how since supposedly all cars built from 1997 to 1999 had dual row but thats what we pulled out today.
Since i assumed i had a dual row bearing i bought a dual row update kit that is not the correct kit. THe supplier is sending me the single row update kit. Heres a picture comparing the single row we pulled out of the car with the dual row update kit bearing I received.
Left is the update kit bearing and right is the single row we pulled out.
