Yes, I do know all about these not any less then you do, I am sure. It is not a rocket science after all.

So I will type slowly just for you:
I had RMS seal replaced once, together with the Interrmediate Shaft Flange and then:
At the next occurence, 1.5 years later, I had RMS leak done again AND IMS flange replaced.
That was twice in my book.

I was offered by the mechanic the IMS BEARING replacement with an aftermarket one but declined since it would invalidate my engine warranty. The bearing itself looks very good but it makes no difference anyway since the first reason is all I am concerned with.

Clear now?

try wading thru the aaa website.
they used to offer a bumper to bumper 7 year/up to 85k mi.
warranty.
at least that is what i ended up with back in the day............
used it once for coolant expansion tank----no questions asked and paid claim.

Wow, thanks for all the responses guys. I called fidelity today, but apparantly you have to buy the warranty from the dealer. (new to this, but im sure most of you knew this)

Unfortunately I wont be able to contact the dealer until saturday...so since i'm buying the warranty through the dealer, is that specific dealer the only place that i can take the car for service? I will be moving about 4 times over the next 2 years all over the US. Since my pcar has 38k on it, I'm getting a little more nervous when i read more and more threads on this board. I believe easycare will let me use dealers all over the country.

Investing the 4k, by the numbers, would probably be the best decision...but i unfortunately reached out to buy this car a few years before i was financially ready...but whats the point in saving for 40 years from now when you dont even know if you're going to make it that long??

For info I purchased my warranty from a dealer over the phone, but I did not had to show them the car at all. I live 6 hours away from the closest Porsche dealer...

You can use most if not all auto warranty at any auto repair shop.

seems kind of wierd that they dont want to inspect the car before giving you a warranty...I purchased the car with an inop horn as well as a few minor flaws. I guess i can get those fixed when i'm up on the lift for the first time.

One question i still have: I know many of the 996s have had RMS leaks. As stated in my OP, mine has not. If my clutch were to start slipping in say 5000 miles, would I be able to get the tranny out under warranty by saying that I need my RMS fixed? I've read that people go ahead and get the RMS done when the clutch is being changed...but i'm not sure if thats done b/c theres visible leakage present...or if they just expect a leak soon and fix the seal as a precaution.

I assume the warranty have some ways to check for false claims... and also think about how much money it would cost to do all the security check and put a balance in between... I don't think there are so many abuse, as there are only so many things they cover and most of them nobody want to replace them for the hell of it.

The dealer will not replace the RMS seal unless it is leaking (or has shown signs of leaking in the past).

$2k for IMS AND clutch? this is at home I presume!

Local shops at "quoting" $4k admittedly on the highest side of the range in hopes to come in much lower. Several factors are included in the high priced quote including an slave cylinder and a new flywheel. - knock those out and you are in the $2700 range.. I think $2k would be pretty tough to find a shop to do this for. That said..... its still the best way to "solve" the issue and for those thinking of spending $4k on a warrenty and needing a clutch on your own nickle... I might just "opt out" get the work done and drive the wheel off it

^ OEM Clutch parts cost $400, RMS is $40 and LNE IMS is around $6-700. How much would labor be in hours? If you are replacing other parts, then its additional.. Why is $2K not realistic?

I have an Easycare warranty, one level down from Total Care. I recently had a check valve failure that led to hydraulic pump failure and other issues. Easycare is denying the entire claim stating that the warranty covers control valves, not check valves. About $3.5K worth of repair, all told. I plan to go to arbitration. Perhaps, had I gotten Total Care, they would not be dodging this claim. However, to abbreviate a long story, they have been obstructionist at every turn in this tale.
My advice: do not give Easycare your money.

Chao, you posted ~$1100 in parts

@ $125/hr (Seattle shops are $140) thats about 7 hours labor = $900... add 10% tax and you just hit $2200 - James on here had the cheapest I have seen at ~$2500 +/- $ so I dont know... its just that IMO if you "think" its gonna be $2k and it comes out $2700 you might be pissed.. If you think $3500 and it comes out $3k you will be smiley

keep in mind that the flywheel is nearly $1k and they do go bad

^ Ah. My indy charges me $100/hr and tax negotiable with cash. I realize other parts like flywheel, chain tensioners, AOS, slave cylinder and other while you are there list are $$$

I had a new clutch kit installed when I had my RMS replaced under CPO warranty about 5k miles ago. The car has 39k on it.

I'm hopeful that since the flywheel was fine 5k ago, the clutch kit was installed and RMS seal was replaced and not leaking now (fingers crossed) that I can have just the IMS bearing installed at $1600 for the bearing and labor.

No sales tax in DE!

you are right.. you should be fine... there was an 05' that came in the other day for IMS upgrade but it had the big bearing and a good clutch set.. the parts bill was almost zero, pulled the seal ring off the bearing and off he went... those are the exceptions, not the rule... most cars dont know the clutch condition so you have to figure "while you are in there"

Sorry to hijack, but is the RMS change an upgrade or is it just a replacement? I'm checking around for the IMS upgrade and was wondering if I should have the RMS done at the same time. It's not leaking.
