Wanted: Shop in Boston area who can do a LN IMS upgrade on a Mk2 TIP

You actually think I'm calling you names now.
Anyway it's you that seems to have a problem with your assumption that I'm not following your advice to the letter. Not that your advice is bad - I mean it is something that's like "forum 101" basics that I already did do quite a ways before you offered your advice - but it's not your business whether or not I choose to follow your advice or not. who made you the forum police? Stay a while - grow some cred here first
Anyway back on topic:
Hi everyone - I've been following this topic for a year now - and have not found anyone on this forum or renntech who has done an IMS retrofit in the Boston area who has POSTED their experience on line. Maybe my searching skills suck - maybe I decided to stop after an hour of searching - again - my prerogative.
I called around a couple of shops on LN's list - and as I've stated - one tried to talk me out of it and the other said "yeah, but not sure".
This is by far the most popular 996 forum on the Internet - just hoping this post is found by someone who can actually help me answer my original question - thanks y'all!

Attica, Attica, Attica...
You are a strange one, Mr. RoadRage. "Forum Police"? I made a suggestion. You chose not to use it and that's perfectly fine. No further comments were necessary. It seems that you're the one with the thin skin.

I've been shying away from recommending shops for the procedure. It seems a few shops that have done the work more than once are trying to do the work faster to net more money and thats creating issues.
I haven't worked with anyone in the Boston area, but we recently do an IMSR for someone from that area. I'll quiz him to see who he was going to use.

Hahahahahahhahahahahah ! Mr wino - I have to laugh out loud because in every forum, there's one of you. We were missing the character you've filled after Benjamin Choi left. But seriously - if you actually can't answer my original question, or aren't adding anything new to the original intent of this thread - step off! Stop hijacking this thread!

Tiptronics "rarely" have an IMS issue. Seems they have less vibrations at the shaft.
Seldom in life we have the free time to get to know other than our work enviroment. Possibly some crusing around to BS with different shops would help you figure the best place.

The thing it is I have an extended warranty - but at the price of an engine replacement now going sky high due to PCNA raising their prices - I have a feeling the warranty company will fight it tooth and nail...
I did put aside a small fund that I maintain for mods, repairs under the $250 deductible, maintenance etc - and I'm more than comfortable in covering a $3k-$3.5k preventative retrofit of an IMS....

When is your warranty expiring? That would be your grace period for the time being.
My indy mechanic will be doing mine when my clutch goes. He used to work with Spencer *** and Kip Harris from Farnbacher Loles back in the 90s and price is very fair. However, he is 3 hours from you. He is accessible via Amtrack with a Metro North Railroad connection because his shop is a block away from the train station and right off I-95. If you want to make it a winter project and don't mind the drive, I am willing to help out.
PM me..

My warranty expires 2012...so I have some time
I am going to call my warranty company and actually ask them in writing if they'll cover an engine replacement - will let you know!
If they don't - well yes - a winter project may be in the works

Tips do seem to have less IMS issues, but they still can fail.

I have a Tip with 121k miles on the clock. Mine finally had the RMS leak. After talking to the folks at Raby's place and LNE, I went ahead with the retrofit kit. While the engine and tranny were out, we replaced the oil separator, o-rings, water hoses and anything else that would be hard to get to when the engine was back in the car. When they looked at the old bearing, it was practically new. Good thing since this gives me a better feeling about the possible condition of the internals. Either way, I thought it was cheap insurance for a 99 Tip that gets tracked at least twice a month. Hopefully, this prolonged the life of the P-Car for another 100k miles.
