Alright... I got home this morning on the red eye flight, and I had my new Fister sport mufflers waiting for me. I didn't have any trouble installing them. PB Blaster took care of the old bolts with no problem. I ended up taking off the rear tires and the rear bumper and heat shields to give myself better access to the mufflers. I love the sound! Here are a few quick pics and a video clip (sorry for the poor sound quality, it was the best I could do with my digital camera).
I used metal polish on my tips and they look much better too, although I still need to make a few adjustments... I think the right tip is a little crooked...

It was $170 more. I like the looks of the ceramic coating, I like the rustproofing, and the heat dissipation is good too. It was worth the money to me.

Thanks Darin. I appreciate all your help with the transaction. I'm very happy with them.

Ceramic coating can have huge benefits, depending on the application. The first time I heard of it, guys were doing the exhaust systems on racing snowmobiles. With the muffler inches from the intake on stock machines, they got measurable performance gains from doing it. I always thought it would be cool to do on the 996, given the tight packaging back there. No idea whatsoever if it would make any difference.
If you're bored, Google 'Thermal barrier coating'. The Wikipedia article isn't a bad starting point.

I received my FisterDs last week, and I'm chomping at the bit to install them - work and guests have been getting in the way.
Thanks for posting the photos, Dennis. Your 996 sounds great. I'm so envious.
Darin - thanks for the great service. I'll send back my original mufflers to complete the swap as soon as possible.
