Default How long till the next Gen. 911?

The 996 body style ran from 99 to 04. Only 5 years. the 997 is heading into year 7. When will the 998 (or whatever they will call it) be coming out?

I am 6'-3" and am hoping for a new interior without that big fat center console. I did a console delete on my 996 C4S but that is not an option on the 997.

JH,

The next 911 will be the 991 and, based on everything I have read, here are the key points:
  • will be released in 2011 as a 2012 model.
  • the wheel base will be 4" longer but the over all length of the car is not expected to change.
  • the nose will be a little higher to satisfy Euro Pedestrian safety laws.
  • will probably gain 15 more HP versus the 997.2.

The 9X6 was an oddity since the car was out as early 97 (in 986 form) and ran through 05 (Turbo and GT3). So by that token it was 9 years. In all reality though, the 05's were 04 surplus and sold in very low numbers so it really was 8 years for the 9X6 run.

So, a 2012 sounds about right for the 991 to be released.

Geezuz! Everybody already accuses us 911 series owners of having our noses stuck up in the air and now Porsche is going to make that even more so...

Is the 4" longer wheelbase because they want to turn the engine/transmission around in the car, a la Cayman? Or is the raised nose to make room for the front mounted V8 a la Cayman/Panamera? Will the 991 be followed by the 992, then 994, 995, 998, 999?

Have you played with the configurator that has been up for a week or so on the PCNA website? New colors, new packages, new stuff. And a new higher price.

Mark,

Reportedly, the longer wheel base is to get the car in to a different class for MPG mandates. Apparently, the longer wheel base cars have a lower MPG target than shorter wheel base cars.
