Default Pinion bearing sealed?

Heard the pinion bearing is sealed like the IMS. Is this true and who has a replacement?

I would like to have a MKII one day but I have to replace the sealed bearings of the drivetrain. This is unacceptable IMO and would be changed at once!

Cory the answer is "Yes". I had my transmission rebuilt this past spring for a failed pinion bearing.

A new pinion bearing is available from Porsche (P/N 996-302-808-00-M100) and aftermarket suppliers like Pelican. Not cheap at about $450 to $500 IIRC.

Not an easy fix either as it requires a large press (someone said 30T) to remove the old and press on the new one.

Really? I bought my 996 a year ago and my tank has never gone empty.

Something else to worry about. Is there a DIY for that?

I have done a lot of reading on this.. It also happens with out warning what-so-ever. It can empty at anytime.. and when it does.... You dont get any more fluid out of the washers.. YEAH I KNOW! Then I heard this also happens seconds before the IMS fails also.

This is part of the regular maintenance which includes blinker fluid refill and Porsche OEM air for tires at the dealership.

Did you replace with another sealed or some other bearing type?

OEM type sealed bearing. We discussed a non-OEM unsealed unit and the indie and his cup car transmission builder both indicated that this was not their preference. I accepted their responses at face value.

Unreal.......

I'll take one off of a skateboard wheel and use it......j/k

I guess the oil doesn't get around to it well enough because I can't think of another explanation why your indy and trans builder would say that. Bummer......
