Default Cup Holder Mount for iPhone/GPS etc

Anyone with a Mk2 try the following mounts for an iPhone?

ATT just shipped me a "free" 4G iphone because I'm such a glutton for their particular brand of punishment, and I'm trying to figure out how to mount in the car without using a suction cup.

I have always kept my blackberries in the ashtray, which works because the charger port is on the side, but iphone charge port is on the bottom so that won't work.

I bought the first one you suggested AND this one
http://www.amazon.com/Macally-Dockin.../ref=pd_cp_e_0

I am using the later as it provides:
- enough support
- lower profile
- offers fm transmitter.. for wife ipod
- clean charging cable

I was afraid ti would be unstable at first, but believe me I drive in country road all the time and it is perfect. the location on the MkII is great on top of the dash for gps as well. BTW just bought Navigon iphone app for gps, great app, well worth the $29.99

Only negative compared to your first choice, it offers no landscape mode... but there aren't may landscape app right now anyways. so this is really not a problem for me.

If you don't need to power it, I found a great one that clips on to the dash vent on the driver's side (the vanes in that vent are rigid). The iPhone kind of floats just to the left of the steering wheel, very visible and out of the way, but you can't see any mounting hardware.

I'll try to find it for you...

EDIT: Here it is. The picture shows a suction cup, but it also comes with the dash vent clip. Amazon has several that use the dash vent, but this one is the cleanest, IMHO. http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-Win...ref=pd_ys_iyr4

I was one of those morons who bought the first iphone right before they dropped the price from 699 to 499, but hey it was 2007 and I was less concerned with my gadget bill! Plus I got a 100 dollar store credit from apple, that was classy of them. jerks. I actually didn't mind the phone but I never gave up my blackberry and the old iphone eventually died a terrible watery death. I skipped the 3G models. This new one seems more ready for prime time, hopefully I won't be kicking myself !

I need the landscape for the motion x drive app I'm using for GPS right now, and don't need the FM (I have stereo bluetooth in the car), do you think the one I linked is less stable with the phone up on an arm?

Do you find that running with AC causes condensation on the phone? How do you charge it?

I did use both. The one you mention with landscape mode is a VERY GOOD model. My wife took it over in her mini

It is very stable as there is a screw mechanism allowing it to expand and get really tight in the cup holder. If you don't need the power and need landscape you can pull the trigger.

FYI, when using the GPS on long distance you are gonna want to power the device, it drains relatively fast.

So far no condensation issue, and last time I drove two hours under 100F with cold temperature inside, no issue.

I'd be you, buy both I bet you will end up using the FM one, as the charging is quite handy

Also the FM cup put the iphone a tad bit lower in the line of sight and I liked it better.

But again first choice, you are good to go.

OK, I'm missing the point. Why do you want to display the crappy iPhone GPS while driving, rather than the OEM GPS? Other than using the iPhone as a phone or iPod, the only app I'd ever want to display as I drive is Trapster, for which portrait view is better than landscape.

Simple, I don't have the OEM GPS in my car, like many 911 out there, I only have the CDR-23 as radio.

The iphone does a great job at direction, so I don't see why upgrading to the PCM OEM navigation in the car or any other double DIN solutions.

Landscape mode is so limited in use, I'd rather stay in the portrait mode indeed.

I have not use trapster yet, but I need to give it a shot indeed

Thanks for the review. I think you're right about something lower, so I bought the mCup with the arm I originally posted and I also bought a griffin isqueez cradle

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ef=oss_product

I prefer to use the lower profile solution if I can get away with it, and if necessary I'll keep the one with the arm in the trunk or glove box for long trips where I need landscape.

a) I don't like the Porsche nav (esp on the 996 and mk1 997, terrible and 996 nav is really out of date and difficult to update),
b) I don't have nav in any of my cars now (average of $3 to 4K per car X 3 cars is 9-12K I didn't spend on accessories which residualize at like 5% of retail and are 2 generations behind the aftermarket when new),
and c) my setup is perfect for me (I'm pre MOST w/ motorola stereo bluetooth and handsfree).

I have 3 cars, all with bluetooth either from factory or kits, and travel a lot, so having something that I can't forget to bring with me is great. I also don't use GPS frequently, once or twice a month, but I do stream music off my phone to the stereo via bluetooth and take calls via bluetooth, so I'm looking primarily for a portable, casual solution which allows me to take one deice with me to any of my cars or homes which has all of my music, calling, and navigation

Cool, report with your feedback. I think you will be happy with the Fm cup.

Another good thing about the FM cup. it fits like a glove in the .. glove compartment, while the 'arm' one is bulkier and a lot harder to store.

IMHO I believe that the iPhone navigation is superior to any OEM unit that I have used because of its ease of use and is more up to date than other systems I have seen. Yes it is small and lacks a few things but I love it. I also have not seen every OEM system on the market but I'm hooked on iPhone navigation and rarely use the OEM system in my suburban (don't have OEM system in the 996).

I use an app called Navigon on my iPhone. It's very expensive, more than half the price of a dedicated nav device. But it's really superb.

I don't have detailed reports as a GPS holder yet, will let you know on Tuesday, but while mounting it in the car this morning for the drive up to watkins glen, I realized that this thing might be a very passable track camera mount. combined with telemetry from g tac pro or another logger this could be very instructive

check this video on iphone 4 in macally arm mount during some local chicanery (please no comments on responsibility, I'm too young to listen. 1st video is with imovie's image stabilization and 2nd without, nice audio too be sure to try it with headphones on)

Hans.... that vid looks good for a phone. How do you like the iphone 4.... how is the face/face video? Is it jumpy, Im assuming its not 30fps quality but is it liveable. Thinking of purchasing one as well.
