Default Shifter Cables

I am replacing my Shifter Cables and I am scoping out the job before I begin.
I have researched the procedure but can I ask a question?
What are these tabs on the cable shifter selector ends? Do thay need to be removed first? Do they come off with when the ends are pryed off?
The manual says to pry off the selector ends but the illustration does not include the retainer tabs.
Thanks

They will pop off with those tabs in places. When you go into the console to disconnect them at the shafter make sure you mark them at the linkages, or the links themselves or you may need the tools to hold them for adjustment.

Just stick a pry bar between the selector end and the bracket they are mounted on and pop them off.. its simple...

Question:

Just had the IMS replaced (at 29.5 K miles), and while at Watkins Glen, I lost 3rd gear in "the laces" (actually determined that I lost R/1st/3rd/5th, due to the cable and snap lock popping off. Trusted friends have said that the clips whould be replaced each time the tranny is pulled. I am of the thought that since the cables are so now, once they get snapped back in, I am going to ask my indy shop to safety wire them in.......anyone think, with the low miles, I should replace the cables first or simply go for the safety wire. (I would rather save the money for more parts/pieces, but am interested in feedback on this judgement call).
Thankx,
Scott
