Default Gear Lube

My mechanic is asking about gear lube. Thoughts?

We have been using Swepco 201 in every one's gearbox. The reason was twofold. First, the Swepco 201 gear lube has a great track record being used in racing conditions for years with no lube related gear or syncro failures.
Second, even though it seems to be a little pricey compared to the next step up, it really isn't. In a gearbox refill the price is only about $40.00 more for the LE gear oil.

Today I had a fairly long discussion with Matt over at Guard.
They suggest moving to a synthetic gear lube for all the later 996 style Porsche transmissions. The best gear lube on the market is made by Lubrication Engineers and sell for about $100 per gallon. I have about 4 or 5 of you that could use this better gear oil. Unfortunately, we need to buy it in 120 lb. containers.

Question to you is, should we stock it and should we plan to switch over to it? If the consensus is yes we will stock this gear oil.

not sure what the question is... ask the Swepco rep about adding a bit of the 714 (forget the number) to the 210 in a manual gearbox - my indy told me they learned that trick from swpeco dealer -

FWIW - I put it in my car and seriously was shocked how much better it was instantly... I never expected a tranny oil to make any differance, let alone a noticable one - my indy puts it in many many cars w/o issue

Hey Ed,

The question is Swepco, which is the current standard, or the new synthetic from LE. I have no clue about gear box lubes. Is this just fixing a non-problem?

I'll ask him about the Swepco mix you mentioned.

IIRC I paid about $88 for the Swepco and it was worth every penny - That said, go on the GT2/GT3 996 forum and do a search they ALL recommend another brand (starts with s "D" I think) see LVDell, he uses it

Me?

210 plus a little 714 cocktail mix (in the 996)
the 911 says swepco 210 IIRC I have to go back and check the records it was done before my time (6 mo ago) - I might change it if not what I had before
