Rust on Stock Rotors...

I know that it is common for the stock 996 rotors to rust. I know that all rotors rust to some extent, but I have driven many other cars and have never seen rust anywhere near the magnitude of the rust on 996 rotors. The 'drive it when it's wet so it dries before you put it away' theory is fine but what do you do on a rainy day? Driving it in the rain doesn't help... When I was at an independent mechanic yesterday and telling him that I was thinking about getting new rotors because I am starting to feel some judder when I use the brakes (the car has about 45k miles, btw), he told me about another car that he is working on, a Mercedes that has cheap replacement rotors that do the same thing. He said the rust was so bad that the wheels were locked and had to break free when he moved the car. That happens on my 996 too.
Why do you guys think these rotors rust so much more than rotors on other cars? Is there some performance advantage that has the unfortunate side effect of extreme rust or are they just crap like the rotors on the Mercedes my mechanic is working on?
Are there any replacement rotors that won't rust unreasonably that I can buy to replace the OEM rotors? I do not use this car on the track, so I just want whatever is best for normal use.

My C5 Corvette rotors (factory also) rusted the same amount as the 996, always had to dry them out. It is more noticeable on the open style 5 spoke wheels so maybe you need a different style wheel like a BBS style spoke.

If it's just the rotor hats that are rusting, in addition to painting them, as people suggested, you can also get after-market floating rotors with aluminum hats. Expect them to run about $1,500 a set.

Ok, so basically you guys don't feel like the 996 rotors rust more than the rotors on other cars and there are no alternatives other than buying a new set of OEMs when it is time to replace them... Has anyone tried non-OEM rotors?

Correct. I will replace with OEMs since I don't track my Porsche(yet). Mine also rust after washing, but as mentioned, it comes right off after your first stop.

FWIW, my 99 Carrera had a bit of rust on the rotor hats when I got the car. It just looked bad when you looked through the wheels. I cleaned them up with a wire brush on a drill(while the rotors were on the car), cleaned the surface with some brake cleaner and then painted them with Target Galvafroid . It's a cold galvanizing compound that drys to a flat light grey colour that pretty well matches the colour of the rotor face. I did that 2 years ago and the still look like new (and I live in Canada where rust never sleeps!!). ![thumbup](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/thumbup.gif)
