For some reason you might not like the extra power and better handling of the 996.....I don't know what the reason would be but I'm sure there are some odds of it. Oh yah now I remember
I've seen a highly modified older 911 whoop some major tail on the 996 running around the track.

Back to basics the 996 has more room inside with better stuff to take care of comfort. If you have the money to take care of either car you'll be happy.
