GPS plug falls out of lighter / power socket?

this man speaks the truth!!!!!
But about the lighter socket, it looks like a simple DIY. Removing the center console is easy. It's just a plug to the cig. socket. Unplug it. Unplug the old socket with the tabs (careful)... then reverse with new socket.

Hey Andy, mine did the same. You may find help at RadioShack for a few bucks. I went to RadioShack and bought a plug that was designed with 3-4 foot cord as an extension. It has a built in switch that kills power as well so I never touch the GPS for on/off. It stays put in the socket. Wish they made it shorter as it sticks out about 2 inches.

If this new socket cures the problem for $30 shipping, I'm psyched!
Do I just pull the panel away from the dash to get at the back of the lighter socket, or what?

Andy,
The "horseshoe" in held on by plastic tabs in the back of it and just pops off. Use a plastic spatula to get behind the horseshoe and pry the tabs out of the slots. Start at the bottom (on either side) and work you way up to the top and then back down the other side.

aside from the prying carefully, everything else is cake.
to remove the switches, just push them in when you have the horseshoe off.
you have an older car so the clips might be more brittle, just be careful.

I can't figure out how to post the link, but if you search under my user name "Rickker" for a thread "How to remove cigarette lighter socket", you will find a pic of a simple sleeve I made to correct this problem.
It appeared to me, that it is not an easy job to replace the socket, as per the links and posts in the above thread. I have been using the sleeve around the GPS adaptor for several months, and it works just fine. GL.

Where did you get that sleeve and/or how did you make it??
Thanks,

The sleeve idea is a good one, but I figure I can break every tab on the old socket, since the new one comes with all the parts to replace the old ones.

Right. I started off with a longer piece, and used a large drill bit with a piece of heater hose to spin the copper pipe in my drill press. Then used a file and later some emery paper to tweak both the ID and OD as needed. When the fit was right, I just cut off the copper pipe to the length shown in the pic. It's not a bad rework job, as only a minimal amount of material had to be removed from the 7/8" copper pipel

So, I finally got around to replacing the lighter socket. I figured out how to get the old one out. Problem is, I assembled the new one out of sequence, and couldn't get the damned thing in without taking the plastic lighting sleeve out. Of course, I broke the thing trying to get it off the assembly. Another $30 to Suncoast - next time I'll know how to assemble the thing. Blah!
