Default GPS plug falls out of lighter / power socket?

Does this happen to everyone? I can't drive with the GPS plugged into the lighter socket without it popping out. Is there some kind of adapter I am missing? Even the Porsche battery charger doesn't seat into the socket cleanly.

What gives?

A US version of the lighter socket? Why wouldn't the Porsche branded battery charger fit in the stock socket? Makes no sense.

Cigarette Lighter Socket Upgrade - 1997-2001 models

In 1997-2001 model Boxster (986) and Carrera (996) vehicles, many of the plugs and power adapters for accessory devices fit too loosely in the slightly larger diameter sockets. This causes intermittent contact or loose connections. This kit features the newer style DIN/SAE Standard cigar lighter assembly and fits most accessory plugs and adapters better. No mechanical or electrical modifications are necessary, it is a direct replacement.

Comes with tension sleeve, light ring, and newer style lighter.

any amount of PITA is worth it if the end result is a smaller hole

Ordered! Thanks. Now to figure out how to pull the trim piece off without breaking anything!
