Default C2 vs C4 in the snow

Hey guys,

Sorry for all the questions lately. I've been testing different cars lately and I'm getting close to making my purchase. I'm still just looking for the right car.

With proper snow tires, does the C2 still perform reasonably well in snow compared to the C4?

I live in southern British Columbia so we don't get very much snow but I do travel up to the ski hills and I also travel some of our mountain highways. Realistically, I drive in bad conditions probably less than 5% of the time. Most of my winter driving is on wet, sanded roads.

I would prefer the C4 but they are way harder to find on the used market; especially the 99s and 00s that I'm looking at.

Opinions would be great. Thanks!

IIRC there are a couple MKI C4's in the Seattle/Portland area... not much of a drive for you.

Let me know if you find something you want "looked at" and if I can I will for you...

FWIW - the C2 is awesome in the snow and last year when Seattle had record snowfall i drove mine (with Blizzaks) everyday to work.....untill the snow melted and the sand blasting was more than I was will to take - then I switched to the SUV....only the sand was a problem for me

keep in mind where we came from

With the right tires, a C2 should be quite good in the snow.

In my experience, a C2 can be very good in the snow. I run mine on snow tires all winter long, and nothing other than deep stuff stops me (because of ground clearance). The only thing you have to remain aware of is that 100% of the torque is going to two wheels rather than four, so you can't be careless with the throttle.

With proper tires, a C2 should be no problem. Former owner of my GT3 drove it year round in MN. Limiting factor is ride height.

I agree with the previous posts - you should be fine with a C2 and proper winter tires.

C4 or C4S are nice, but not absolutely required for snow driving.

+1.... road height is the limitation.

Drove my 996 with 17" blizzacs daily in the rain, sleet and what have you. Was terrific. I drove my '89 C-4 with all seasons in the snow and was not nearly as planted, to say the least. Moral of the story is a separate set of dedicated snows are the answer, and a C-4 is not neccessary. do not hesitate to get a C-2 if that is what comes your way and turns your light on.......

I'm brand new here (first post actually) and figured I would check in on this one. I'm from Chicago and was in the same debate of C2 vs. C4. After all of my research and hemming and hawing, I found my baby. About 3 weeks ago, I bought a 2000 996 C2 for use as my daily driver outside of Chicago. I was able to find another set of wheels and snow tires on Craigslist for $300. So far, no regrets! I just make sure to keep it power washed off as often as possible and try not to smile too much when I drive!

It's not the same thing, but I took my 1988 Honda CRX Si (1922 lbs) skiing all the time in VT, NH, & ME. Had Blizzaks on it and like everyone here said, the only limiting factor was the height.

Granted, I now have an Audi A6 Avant with snow tires (and chains for the front when it gets deep), so I just love snow!

Where did you ski in NH and Maine?

I just turned 40,000 miles this week. I'm a member of Ferrarichat.com and one of the members has a saying at the bottom of his posts, "Not putting miles on your Ferrari is like not having sex with your Girl Friend so she'll be more desirable to her next Boy Friend." That has to be one of my favorite automotive sayings ever! It also translates very well to Porsches.

The C2 would do just fine and I can attest that the "ride height" issue can also be addressed.
