Bill, make sure you tell everyone how you blew up not one but two engines this weekend!

The fact that it died at 89k seems unusual since most of the deaths I've read were from lower mileage vehicles.

Damn keep us updated...that sucks...

Paspar 2, Please define "sat for prolonged period", weather is bad here and mine has sat for several weeks.

BillJ, Sorry to hear about your car...

I suspect it wasn't just a by chance engine failure.

Patrick - it was Bob that blew up that $500 944 engine not me :-) Oh and it NEEDED to die. Ha. OH and FU. (we had a Lemons race this weekend and the timing belt broke on the 944 we were running for those that dont know).

No the 996 was a daily driver car, not a queen. Will keep posted on engine failure cause and resolution. Keeping fingers crossed and Hendricks is going to bat for me. This was not an abused car.

Well dealer tried to get some goodwill dollars for me but being the third owner and higher mileage they were unwilling to do anything. Costs are pretty high but a used motor is not something I am comfortable with so will have to go that route. Checking prices now with other sources. This stinks.

Any chance you caught it in time and is rebuildable? Sounds like if you shut it off right away and don't restart it, the damage can sometimes be fixed. (still not cheap)
Have they pulled the engine apart yet?

There is a ton of frass, some apparantly as big as an inch by quarter inch. They did not tear it fully apart yet as they did not want to go too far on my dime to determine definitive cause. It made a lot of noise before i shut it down... This really sucks and looks like i will be out of pocket about $17k.

What about a used engine and then upgrade the IMS, the chain tension guides, Variocam pads & chain, water pump and AOS. Possibly the tensioners. These are the parts most subject to wear.

Wow, sorry for your situation. Please keep us posted. I'd be curious to know the final cost breakdown. Are you weighing the X51 option?

Been burned before on unknown used motor and not interested in going that route. Either fresh rebuilt from factory or good known builder for me.
