He chose the '99 because it was a groundbreaking design for Porsche (water cooled and all). He loved it in the factory videos on the Coochas website too!
Funny, when I picked up my car from the mechanic, it was sitting next to a 997, and my car looked more vintage to me, especially from the rear. Maybe it's my Twist rims?

There was a lot of unfounded fear that the 996 was going to be a GT car, and it turned out to be 2x good as the 993.

He probably was paid by Porsche to say that ![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
It's about time the 996 gets the respect it deserves!
So many enthusiasts hail the 993 as being the last of the air-cooled, but no one stands up to give due credit to the game-changing 996 model. Over a decade later and the core 996 aesthetics still blow competitive designs right out the door. As classic as the original.

Who cares what Hurley thinks;-) I've always liked the early 996s (1999-2001). In fact I think it's an incredibly pure distilling of the classic 911 shape whereas the 997 is bloated.
In fact I was seriously looking at 996s before buying the 964 last Fall. Ultimately it was a fiscal decision...I don't think 996s are at the bottom of their depreciation yet, whereas, 964s obviously are. That and it's just a toy so something more raw was ideal.

You know I wanted a 99, and almost bought one, but my 2002 came up at a price I could not refuse...so I bought it.
The 99 may be a bit lighter (I have weighed mine on a certified scale and it weighs 3000 lbs empty) but my extra 25 hp go a long way to erasing the difference, plus the variocam "plus" gives me a usable bump at 3000 rpm, plus the stiffer chassis is stiff. I'm not regretting this car one iota.
Don't get me wrong, I love the 99, especially with a reman motor installed. I like the throttle cable, and I like the LSD (when equipped thus), and peas and rice I prefer the fired egg headlights over he droopy blobs on the MkII cars. I *think* I still prefer my 2002 car though...yeah I do.
Anyway - the point is that the 996 made Hurley's list and that's got to count for something.
