G96 Transaxle Rebuild
With 80K miles on my original box, I figure this would be a good project to prepare for.
Has anyone done a rebuild in their home garage?
I am aware of the need of some special tools (heavy press / pullers), but was thinking of doing as much of the work / preparations myself, before resorting to a specialist for the difficult stuff.
Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Really bad idea JP. I don't mean to sound arrogant, but if you have never been inside one of these, I do not think you want to try this. I would have to say that the G96 street car box is not for the DIY. It is pretty complicated, and could cause you a lot of issues. Aside from needing a 80 ton press to get the gear stack apart, there are several ways to mess this up, leaving you with broken gears and very large headache.
If you decide that you are going to do this, by all means feel free to contact me and I will try to help you as much as possible. I realize that there are certainly gearboxes out there that are very doable for the DIY man, I just don't think that this is one of them. We had to make several special tools to ensure that we could do this rebuild correctly, when you factor in all of the time and tools you are going to need you are most likely going to end up pay more then you would a quality shop to do this work.
Just my .02 cents on this, feel free to disagree.
