Engine number info
is there any documentation about engine numbers? Before I go dropping 4K into this engine I woudl like to know a little about it.
Is it the original engine? for starters
Can anyone guide me in the right direction?
Thanks

If AT precedes the serial number, it is factory reman.
1st digit is number of cyls
2nd digit - 6 is for normally aspirated, 3 is for GT3, 4 is turbo
3rd digit is production v=1997, w=1998....5=2005
4th thru 8th is serial number

What's your year and model type? There are a whole boat load of numbers to sort through. Two example's for 99:
99 coupe, USA import, Engine #'s go from 66X00001 and up, 99 C4 = 68X00001 .
Huge lists and depends on if it is a C2, C4, Cab etc.
Also big production numbers.
1999
C2 = 10728
Cab's = 9458
C4 = 4773
C4 Cab = 3081
So just for Y 99 your looking at 28040 installed engines, less the 20 thou alleged IMS blow up's for that year. <sarcastic mode on>
Total MK1 production - all models = 85556, MK2 total = 89706
As long as your engine has the correct VIN# for the year and doesn't have an X it *may* be orig but the sticker under the front hood should match the engine VIN stamped on the block.
The cardex service that you have to pay for from Porsche will list all info for your car such as options and serial numbers.

Another check you can do is the engine model against the year and model of your car. That info is under the hood and the engine model # will begin with M96/xx and then a space and then another three digits.
Your ECU read out will also tell you the engine number that was flashed at the factory that you can check against the the engine stamping.
