That's not called humor. It's sarcasm.

BTW, I double checked the poll and there were 22 owners who reported having IMS failure, not the 30 that I previously stated. Who knows how many of these engine failures were attributed to the IMS but were actually something else.
More than 22. And that's probably 22 too many.

Again, 130,000 996s produced vs. 22 Rennlist reported failures. If the actual number of failures was anywhere close to the 10% that some claim, the number reported in the RL poll would be well into the hundreds or thousands. JMHO , and no I am not a statistician.
Like you said, you're not a statistician. So, don't assume there should be more IMS failure reported on RL.

This is hardly "Flamable."

RMS is no big deal. It's a gasket. Keep in mind that there is an art to putting on gaskets, and that may explain why some need replacing more than once.
RMS = Rear Main Seal. So it is not a gasket!! You have radial seals, like the RMS and you have gaskets, like a head gasket or water pump gasket, big difference. There is no real art in installing a RMS, cleanliness is next to godliness, other than that, factory tool (or any purpose built tool) is pretty much idiot proof.

Great point 130k cars produced and 22 reports on Rennlist.
When these do break then the owners want to get answers from the internet as well as share the pain. I would be curious what the real number of failure percentages are, especially for 1999 production 996s.
I was one of the lucky 130k I guess. My car was RMS leak proof and no IMS problems, and honestly I was pretty darned happy about it, so is the new owner.

Now not to say other things broke, in fairness....
Like the CD 6disk player, alternator, coolant tank, oil sending sensor, MAF sensors (4), Cam Sensor and the key switch and the window regulators oh and wheel bearings ..you know the normal crap that should fail in a car with only 34k miles

tia,

Just had a PPI done during the holidays. ~$200 at a porsche dealership. Included all tests they would do for a CPO and a DME read as a freebie.

It was worth it as it detected a few issues, including the RMS leak with I used to bring the price down to account for future repairs. There is probably an advantage to do this at a Porsche dealership.

Good luck with your search.
