Hi Ed,
Welcome.

Take a minute to read the buyers guide found on this forum. It will answer many questions.

I have heard PPI from $100 to $600 so do shop around and ask first. There are extra services that can be done at a price (like dme reading)

RMS is a seal, some never leak, some never stop leaking. Porsche made many many cars and what you read about are people problems. Most people don't take time to go on forums and post threads like "my rms isn't leaking today"

Search is your friend. Post potential cars for input. Take your time and do your homework.

Cheers
Ed

I never had any RMS issues on my 1999. It had 34k miles when sold a few weeks ago

Dunno if mine is leaking or not because it's parked at an airport since my job keeps sending me out of town!

I am PM'ing you my address so you can mail me the spare key... I will keep the RMS from leaking by driving your car while you are away

Washington State is quite a haul for a little joy ride!

Between vacations and work I think I've gone through one tank of gas the past month. That's okay, when I do drive it daily I put 50 miles on it each day since I'm around 23 miles from the office one way. So I guess it all adds up...I'm just going through a busy time where our business is actually growing. In this economy I guess that's a positive thing!

As others have said. The RMS by itself is a mere annoyance. The IMS failure is the end of the motor.

Yes, 99.99% of them leak, & about 99.9999999% of them also eventually have IMS failure & explode randomly on you. These guys here & myself represent the lucky 0.0000001% who got the "good cars"

By the way, Ed... My RMS isn't leaking today.

Mine was leaking last week, but not this week. It only leaks every other week, except during leap year.

LOL

When I purchased my 996 I decided to forgo a PPI at a Porsche dealer and instead employed the services of a fortune teller. We held a séance in the sellers garage with a Ouija board and everything, I pulled out all the stops.. Luckily she didn’t see an RMS or IMS failure in the cars future so I went ahead with the purchase. So count me in the 0.0009% of 996 owners who have not experienced these failures.

My only regret is that I didn’t ask Madam Crystal Gaze what brand and weight of motor oil I should use.
