Cool

Garrett and Rallyjon may have a point. The plot is weak, there is very little character developmnent, and I don't think it was ever on the New York Best seller list.
But I have read mine, enjoyed the explanations and pictures (all G-rated), and refer to it often when I think I have a question. It really is the essential companion for a 996 owner.
The 996 Forum on Rennlist would be the other must-read for 996 folks.

Garrett, Merry Christmas to you too!

I agree with everyone about Adrian's book since I own a 964 and that book also. You can go to his website and ask him if you want the answer to why the 996 book is less technical. I think I know why but I will not speculate.

If I could sum up my criticism of the 996 book, and to a lesser extent, his 993 book, is that they mostly summarize information that's available elsewhere. The Streather books are an excellent one-stop-source for a summary of "official" information provided by Porsche. Great specs, stats, options, stuff from the owners manual, etc. IMO, it is a perfect first book to read when you start to learn about a particular model with an eye toward buying one.

But, once you own one, and you start digging deeper, you may be disappointed. If you're looking for primary research, deep insights into the sometimes controversial technical issues these cars have, and their resolutions, you're much better off reading Rennlist.

This is why I bought mine, in addition to the historical information. If I want more technical, how-to type information, I'll use the factory service manuals.

By the way, does anybody have any experience with 911secrets.com? It's some sort of a book you download!? $35. Worth it?

Yeah, I ordered my copy yesterday after the first couple reviews!

Should be awesome, except for weak plot and lack of character development.

Oh, I beg to differ. There are more than a few characters in there. They may not be very well developed, but they're there.

+1.

The DIY/maintenance is very light; doesn't cover the most usual/frequent DIY maintenance, and covers other more esoteric items in very cursory fashion. It is not clear to me why some DIY are included and other obvious ones are not.

IMHO, a really great book for general reading; but not "essential" by any means. I get all my DIY instructions from Renntech, Rennlist, others.
