Porsche makes greater boxer motors, but seems like every one has an Achilles heel (993 SAI, 3.2 valve guides, 2.7 broken studs, 964 leaking head etc).
I'm interested in acquiring a water pumper but this known IMS (intermediate shaft) failure issue is giving me pause.
So I'm trying to understand how real and widespread this problem is, so please share the following:
Yes, I have had an IMS problem (not someone you know, but you)
And my solution was
a)Repaired (Cost associated please)
b)Replaced engine (Cost associated please)
c)Got rid of the vehicle (sold, trade, charity, parts vehicle, etc)
d)Something else (Please share your story)
I realize this topic has been covered numerous times (yes search is my friend), but my hope is to get an answer w/o the hype. Thanks

You might of wanted to include the mileage in the survey. Not sure if you can do a double survey.
No problem, no leaks either- 99k, (knock on wood)

No engine issues yet, at least no RMS,IMS failures, but like all 911 Porsches (previous SC, 912, current 996) they tend to have oil weepage(sp) issues, both minor and major. So far, my 10 year old 911 has been reliable and most importantly a great car to 'drive'.

Sounds pretty simple to what I've read here about what dealers are doing. I haven't done it but I read that all you have to do is remove the seal off of the IMS bearing to allow oil to be introduced to the original bearing. IMO, that would probably save a lot of them or possibly all of them from failing. Imagine it couldn't take long to do it too.

My car had the engine replaced at 105k for excessive RMS leaks (they kept changing it, and it kept leaking). That engine was a mix of track and street.
I have 40k on the new engine (not that new any more) and it has a mix of track and street.

I answered no because I haven't had a problem but I bought the car second hand with a new engine installed several year earlier. I do not know why the engine was replaced.
2002 model 996 C2
new engine in 2005 at 40K miles
current milege 85K miles.
Car runs great, no funny noises, great throttle, great chassis, crap stereo.
