Was there a hackto make top work while in motion, besides SmartTop that is? My 2003 will operate with ebrake off, and while in motion (although admittedly sometimes fails to latch successfully going into a loop of front latch cycling). To the best of my knowledge mine does not have a SmartTop module?

When upgrading my Becker stereo, I noticed a blue/black wire attached to the A connector and on the schematics it was labeled "Reverse Gear". I tested the line and sure enough, when you put the car correctly into reverse, the car sends 12V power to the radio. It's my prediction that this may have something to do with the backup sensors, but since my car did not have that option, I decided to make good use of the wire and connect a yellow LED to the one dash blank on my center console. I usually don't have a problem finding the proper gears, but when a trusted person is driving my car, I find it helpful when they're fumbling around trying to get it in reverse properly. The light helps.

Here is the thread if interested. It should only take about an hour of your time to install.

The Reverse Gear source is also good for when you add an auto dimming mirror.

I don't know if the relay hack that works with Boxsters also works (or if there's a variant) for the 996. I assume so. There are two levels of hack - one just involves bending a relay pin flat (allows top to operate while car is moving, but E-brake still needs to be clicked up one notch); the other involves a single shunt to be installed which eliminates the e-brake requirement. Maybe someone who has DIY'd this on a 996 will speak up.

It's about 15 minutes' work (and zero $ materials cost) to perform this on a 986 Boxster.

If you pay extra for expidited shipping to the transport company you will not get your new to you 2003 cab delivered on time. Instead you will have to wait an additional two weeks due to a business trip.

In 2002+ models, the second cup holder has a larger diameter than the first. For years I had to put a lid on my morning smoothie cup and ate/drank it at work. Now I can keep it in the second cup holder and sip it while sitting in traffic.

When the 996 is not moving, the instrument cluster OBC temp display "pauses" and displays the last reading from the outside temp. sensor (located forward of the radiator in the front bumper). This eliminates erroneous readings caused by heat from the radiator while the car is stationary. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=647763

I think this is most certainly true, because my car seems to record more miles then I actually drive. I will have to do some tests with my other cars to prove this

i believe the odometer and speedometer are totally separate mechanisms.

It does register higher. Check it with a GPS unit to see how much.

Mine registers exactly 3mph higher. Pretty sure my '10 GTI does the same thing. I thought it had something to do with liability.

Default update to tape mod

[QUOTE=Vince124;13127884]Not much to add here, but if you are unfortunate enough to still have a cassette tape holder, it does make a nice iPhone 6 holder by propping the phone on the two top "trays" and wedging in between the radio *****. Holds pretty well for GPS usage on all but the hardest of turns. Either way, I still plan on getting a double DIN with touchscreen soon.[/QUOTiE]
If you put the phone in the bottom holder you can put the top under the radio buttons. Works great. I have the ssk but not sure it that's why it fits

I've read, here on RL somewhere, that Germany has some law that if the speedo reads UNDER they get fined so it's set over to avoid that possibility. And for the circular lulz here's a link to a post referencing this thread as a source: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post10602347

I didn't know my 996 was going to easier to work on than my Land Rover.
