Default Swepco 201 in the Front-Axle Drive OK?

Can I use Swepco 201 (80W-90) in the front-axle drive of my 2001 C4?

Lots of folks already using it in the transaxle with real good results, from what I can tell.

Why wouldn't you use the Shell Transaxle that is made for the car? IIRC, it's 75W-90

I have the dreaded 2nd gear syncro issue in the transaxle (see https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-2nd-gear.html for some discussion of my car and other's) and while I'm sure that the Shell Transaxle oils is just fine, I'm looking for something that might make the syncro issue less of an issue. No oil will fix worn syncros, but some oils have certain properties that can lessen the symptoms and increase the longevity of the components before they (will) have to ultimately be replaced.
I work with a lot of mechanical engineers who were explaining some of these things to me; I'm an electrical engineer, so am out of my element about these things.

I used Mobil DelVac this season on my 4S, works well. Local P dealer did recommend using Swepco 201.

FYI

peavy....makes sense. Thanks.

MTB...absolutely agree. I have used nothing but Delvac in my track p-car cars (except the CAB which I use Shell transaxle).

I'll keep you all posted.

MTB, thanks for the P-dealer info. I think I'll try swepco 201 in the front axle as well then, and see how she does.

Forgive my lack of knowledge here but how cold does it get where you're at. With Swepco, I found it's noticably more difficult to shift on cold mornings than with the factory fill, and it takes a good bit of time for it to warm/ loosen up. Just something to think about. Since I"m in ohio I went back to the factory fill. I wasn't having any syncro issues though, just put swepco in based on their reputation when I flushed the fluid.

No need to apologize Andy, thanks for the info! I hadn't heard that about cold and Swepco. It doesn't get much below 50F here on a cold morning, and normally it's probably around 60-70F (and 71F in my garage while it was 52F outside, the other day). But still, if the factory fill is having issues when cold, Swepco might exacerbate it?? Hmmm.

Ed lives in WA (where it's colder than San Diego) and his Indy used Swepco on his transaxle, and he loved it to pieces.

What weight did you use? Was it 201, or was it the much much thicker 210?

It was 201. It was fine in the warmer weather but around this time when we dip into the low 40's or high 30's at night it was a bear for the first few miles in the morning. I doubt you'll have any issues with your climate.

Still, something for me to think about. It was 50s driving in this morning.

Did you even have that issue running OEM recommended oil?

Factory fill still gets heavy in the cold but not like the Swepco did.

p.s. isn't it like 6am out there? I thought I got to work early (7am)

Hmmm, OK, I need to keep that in mind then. My main concern are my syncros, and trying to get something with less slip agent added. I don't (think) I have an LSD in my C4 (no one has been able to tell me how to tell), so was also toying with using Redline 75W90NS, the "NS" standing for "no slip".

Yeah, I got into work today at 5:30. Having a few issues with our product at a customer's site overseas, so came in early to try to sort things out. So fun.
