+1 for cars.com. 996s are "normal" cars, so you really don't have to haunt specialist dealers to find good ones, as with older 911s.

I prepared this page a couple of years ago for my 993 hunt, any many of them are useful for 996s, too, but autotrader and cars.com have a ton of 996s.

+1 on the porsche usa website, that's where I found my car, you can search certified and standard inventory

I also like cars.com, they have porsche cpo and best o all they don't have those different levels of listings that you find on autotrader, so f you sort by price or mileage it actually does.

I would be very, very afraid of craigslist.

Well, in the fall months they tend to sun themselves on bare rock. Not a lot of time left before they go back to their burrows for winter though--generally you won't see anymore by late october.

I don't think that's the case at all. Like any used car ad, you have to do due diligence. You check out the seller, you check out the car, if they're good, you buy the car, if either are the least bit fishy, you walk away.

I bought my Audi through a Craigslist ad and the seller was way over the top of being a good guy. Really really nice poeple.

I have sold two Porsches using Craigslist also...

I'll put in a good word for Roger Jobs in Bellingham for service as well. Our dealership in Vancouver is sadly sadly lacking in this regard. Not that my 996 needs a lot of service, but RJ did a CPO warranty differential rebuild for me on my previous car. No muss no fuss.

Just bought my 996 cab a few weeks ago. Once I zeroed in on my car I was surprised to find it was listed on a few different sites (ebay, autotrader, porsche.com). Funny thing too because it was a different price on each site.

I kept coming back to autotrader and ebay during my search. Both sites tended to be the most user friendly (for me at least) and I could narrow down my search to just what I was looking for. Seemed like they also allowed more pictures too, which is nice if you're not able to see in person before buying. Cars.com was a good resource as well, while ebay and autotrader tended to overlap with the same cars, cars.com seemed to pull their ads from a different source. I thought that Carmax tended to price their cars a little higher than everyone else, and no room to negotiate. The Porsche.com site was nice for locating cars, but their cars were the highest priced and I could find the exact same car for sale on a different site for thousands less.

So I suppose my advise would be once you find 'Your Car', search around on the internet to see if it is listed anywhere else before you begin your negotiations. We bought our car 900 miles away, took a flight and a long weekend and enjoyed the road trip home.

Jasper - I'm looking for 03-04 C4S convertible; manual; I'm flexible on the options list; would prefer the colour to be Speed Yellow, but I haven't seen too many of those.

I would also recommend searching the surround PCA chapters. The chapters usually have a for sale section where you could find numerous items, including cars.

2004 Porsche 911 C4S Cab

CPO till Oct 2010; done about 47K, asking $45.9. I've checked CarFax - no issues there.

I think the price is a bit too high - do you folks agree? What should I be looking at in terms of pricing?

Considering more than one dealer offered me a new 08 Cab at $30K off of sticker ($100K marked down to $70K) earlier this year (around March) I'd say the price high.

But I haven't delved into market prices for cabs.

Visit www.kbb.com and plug in the numbers, etc and get wholesale (trade-in), private sale, and retail sale numbers. I like to assume that dealer doesn't even have trade-in into a car. Whenever you try to trade in a vehicle dealer will offer less than the public trade-in value. Some dealers will tell you they use back of the book numbers. What they're using are up to date auction prices for a cars simlar to your trade-in. A dealer knows he can get at least X number of dollars - minus some cost of transport and selling -- for a trade in at an auction yard should he not be able to move the car on his lot.

Thus I reason that a publicly available trade-in value an optimistic value and bargain accordingly.

price is high but look what your getting:

4S cab in a popular tripple black color.
It CPO'd, so it should have newer tires, brakes and all maint. must be current and all past maint. done at the dealer and on time.
Should be unmodifed in any way.
It has the Porsche Sport Exhaust, very expensive option.

MK2 996's have been holding their values fairly well. However, I think in the next 6 to 8 months you'll see them fall as more 997 lease returns hit the auctions.

When it comes to price, look at it this way. KBB Retail vs KBB trade in. How much do you want to loose if you have to sell the car in 3 or 6 months. Typically the dealer paid less than KBB trade in for the car. Try to get it somewhere in the prv. party range.

Car has 47K miles - you should pay no more than $40K for that car if it's in near-perfect shape, CPO'd etc. Dealers are salivating to make deals now - a cab with winter coming?? Go for it.
