Default Looking for windhield replacement instructions

Getting ready to replace mine and want to be an "educated consumer"

Anyone happen to have the instructions? I will be getting the oem glass (seems to be the only option) I read that Porsche specifies using a 2 part adhesive (source cannot be trusted fully though) while my glass shop is using a black urethane adhesive.....

thanks

wow - my idea is let a glass guy do it... they have all the tools and do it everyday, I would not want to attempt a DIY on such a part - As for glue, I am guessing the same glass guy has done a Porsche before and I wathc the news fairly regularly.... didnt see any stories on windows from Porsches flying out as drivers were heading home from work

GL!!

No kidding. I hired the only glass guy my Porsche deal recommends to change my windshield. I watched him work for a good 90 minutes on my car. My conclusion was there was no chance an inexperienced person could tackle this job. The outcome was great and it was money well spent. Do yourself a favor and hire a pro. Ask your Porsche dealer who they use.

I don't think he wants to change it himself, he just wants to make sure whomever changes it does it according to Porsche spec.

YEA, that makes sense. The part where you asked if anyone had the instructions thru me for a loop !!

I get it now... you want to be sure THEY do it right by know how it is done.
Smart!

its mid 400's from suncoast but with shipping to NY it makes more sense to get it at the local dealer for low 600's. Geico is paying anyhow. They tried hard to push safelite but after a brief conversation with the local shop I decided to never EVER speak to them again. Found a local glass shop that was doing a windshield replacement on a g37 as I was walking in... installer seems knowledgeable (and old enough to drink legally unlike the other place)...

LOL @ drink legally

I had some chips repaired in the last couple years with varying success. Like you I will stay clear of the big name shop and found a little shop with a guy who seemed to know his stuff. That said, his chip repair was the worst "looking" so far but that can happen, he gets Porsche in often as his place is dirrectly behind the dealer - I think I would use him for a replace if it came to it.

GL and thanks for posting... i bet when done it will look awesome!!

I had the glass replaced on my daughters 944S a few months ago by Safelite for about $450 with the top tinting and antenna in glass. It was the exact same glass brand as the factory and install was flawless. I almost wish mine would pick up a rock so I can get mine replaced.

I had the front windsheild replaced about 6 months ago with Seikurt (OEM). I asked the auto glass people to send their most experienced Porsche installers. The two guys put the windsheild on in about 45 minutes. He even showed me the area in the lower corners of the glass that do not come all the way into the car, and said that that was an anomaly with Porsches. Make sure that you replace the outer rim and while they have it all apart, put in a new cabin filter since they need to remove the cover to put on the windsheild. They will tell you not to drive the car for about 4 hours while the glue sets, do this! really important for the glue to harden up. Also make sure that they clean the inside of the glass really good before the install, since it usually comes dirty and is much easier to clean while not in the car. I also put some 303 Aerospace Protectant on the plastic under the front of the windshiled on the dashboard. Some will say that German glass pits much too easily and that US glass is better, but I stayed with OEM (German) and it is alreay starting to pit (6 months). I guess I will replace it about every 2 years as just part of maintanence of the car.

Had my glass replaced last year. The best price I found was actually AAA (who knew they replaced windshields?). Call around, the prices can vary by a lot. AAA installed OEM glass in my garage for less than $700 including labor. I got some quotes for aftermarket glass close to $2,000 installed.

The OEM glass is Sekurit which has the embedded antenna and green tinted strip across the top. You also will need a moulding kit ($22) because they will have to cut the old glass out. It's a bear to cut the old glass out.

One option is to order the glass and moulding kit from Sunset and just pay for labor. I would try to avoid that because it's just easier to deal with 1 party if the glass is damaged during shipping or installation.

Does AAA have its own installers or do they send in safelite and its hard selling tween installers to do the job? (quote... "no we cant do it in your driveway. you have to drop the car off at the shop and leave for 4 hours." me:"Leave?" them: "yes. there is no waiting area" me to myself...its joyride time)

It was AAA installers, not a 3rd party outsource. They were experienced auto glass installers, although I don't know if they had ever installed a windshield in a 996. They had no problem obtaining OEM glass for about the same price to have Sunset ship me the parts. So for me it was a no brainer to let AAA have the whole job. Here's the breakdown:

547.62 Windshield 996 541 901 05
25.00 Adhesive
75.00 Labor (2 men mobile installation in my garage for 1-2 hours)

They made a mistake and forgot to order the moulding kit and they had to reschedule so they did not charge me the $22 for that. I thought that was a nice bit of customer service - AND, I'm not even a member of AAA
