996 as an all-year car
Hi rennlisters,
I currently have a 968 as summer car and my winter car is nearing the end of its life. Instead of replacing the winter car, I am thinking why not replace both with a 996 and drive it all year. I live it Ontario Canada and have 10-20cm snow in the winter very often, although they are cleaned up quite quickly in the area where I live. Because of the amount of snow, I think I will go for a C4. Plus I actually like the narrow body (I think classic 911 shape is narrow-body but it's probabily another topic) so I am pretty much limited to 996 3.4 because Porsche only brought MKII C4S to NA, no C4.
Anyway, does anyone here has real life experience in driving his/her 911 in similar winter condition? Is it easy to drive a 911 on snow in a day-to-day basis? Do I really need 4wd? Anyone drive his C2 in winter? Any comment is greatly appricated.

Three Wheelin'
Back in '07 I bought a set of 17 inch Boxster wheels and a set of Blizzaks and drove my Mk II C2 - WITH NO PSM - through a relatively light BC winter.
I had zero issues, except during a particularly deep snow event the belly pan rubbed along the side roads.
Last year we had HUGE snow, but I was out of country so it didn't affect me.
This year I've got a new 996, with PSM and heated seats this time, and I'm looking forward to another winter with no issues.

Hey - I'm in Burlington and commute to Oakville daily. No issues what so ever. No heated seats, no TC...just winter tires and rubber mats. For the most I never heard any scrapping and only occasionally did some snow plowing. I just found I had to take it easy (more for my own sanity and being unsure about how the car would react - I had only got the car in Sept.) There are a few Mk 1 996 C4's (non S) but they are far and few between. Hope this helps and good luck.

Just agreeing with everyone. Just a great winter car (taking ground clearance into account). Most have an extra set of wheels with Blizzaks or equivalent for the winter.

Thanks for all the comments. I am also following another thread "C2 vs C4 in winter". Most fellow rennlisters there suggest that C2 can handle snow just as well so I think I may consider a 996MKII as well.
