Default MAF replacement

I need to replace the MAF -- dealer did readout for CEL and found code P1126 -- "Read out fault codes, fault P1126 present. Checked actual running values of oxygen sensing adaptation, found adaptation values just over threshold to trigger check engine light. Mass air flow sensor is the cause of this fault."

We reset the CEL and I drove for three weeks to see if the CEL would come on again -- which it did in regular driving yesterday. The dealer wants $500+ to do the replacement (including the part).

Is this a simple plug and play item where it's worth the savings to get the part from Suncoast and install it (in my case having my regular mechanic for my other cars, a Mercedes guy, do it), or should I just have the dealer do it?

Does anyone have a photo of where the MAF is or a parts diagram?

Thanks!

Yes, it is plug and play. You dont even need any special tools. You can grip the retaining screws with a pair of pliers by grabbing the OD of the screw heads.

The plug is just a plug.

Yep, regular 996's have security torx also but the torque is null since it is in plastic.

No. The screws are threaded into plastic so there is virtually no torque. You can grab the outside of the heads with pliers to remove and replace.

A little shade-tree but it works just fine.

And many folks think this car is hard to work on.
I think that is an assumption that have helped to generate substantial profits for the dealers.

bought all the security bits for an interchanageble screwdriver (including the Torx security bit for the MAF) $3.99(?) at HARBOR FRIEGHT. All came in a nice rubber case, too.
