The solution is replace the motor. Since, it is "annoying" but still working after a year this way I have better things to do with the $300+ a new sunroof motor which seemingly holds the "memory" would cost so I just hold my finger on it to open and close it. Annoying but cheap

This was a great threat. Going to try this as I am having the same issues.
As for the rattle mentioned above I solved that by installing an "edge guard" - viola no more rattles! Just a rubber strip that goes across the back "springy thing". If anyone is interested I can post pictures.

Hi there!
Sorry I just looked at this thread and saw the reply. The rattle I had was noticeable when the roof was closed (most of the time) and was because if an edge guard vibrating against it. I actually found the solution in a TSB when browsing a different site.
Anyway if that sounds like you - I ordered the replacement part from pelican. (number was updated as the part was also for a 997)
The part number is 99756467100
Hope this helps!

- Close the sunroof
- Release the close button
- Press the close button and hold it
- After about 10 seconds the sunroof will cycle through a complete opening and closing. Keep the close button held down.
- After the cycle completes, release the button and things work as they should (e.g. one touch).
- But, at least for me, only until next ignition cycle :-(
I am noticing my sunroof seems to be sluggish. Seems like the next two things to try are lubricating the rails and other mechanisms, and then replace the motor.
I've seen some comments in this thread about lubrication but am not finding any clear directions. Pointers appreciated.

Add me to the list. I've ordered some Wurth True Glide for grease. It it works miracles on the older cable (Golde) sunroofs. My '76 BMW went from a barely operable hand crank to smooth as silk. I'll report back once I've done it.

Same here, annoying
pdobbs "I have a 2001 996 coupe. When operating the sunroof the back button will not work upon initially pressing it. Neither will the vent button. But if I push the forward button, the sunroof will raise. Then push the forward or back button again, it will close. Then, if I push the back button, it will open up fully. Seems a bit finicky."
Same here...annoying.
