Another IMS question
Are the IMS failure more prone with 2004+ 996 with the 3.6 motor?
Sounds like the 99 996 have the double bearing from the factory and the retro kit is to update it to a single larger bearing?

Robin,
There were numerous debates about reman engines and their "upgrades." Members have left this forum over it the past few years because it got so heated. The only fact I am aware of is that design changes were made on the engine for production in 2006.

Well, for the reason of reading the debates with no conclusive answer I posted this again. Only reason is that I am thinking about doing the retrofit on my own 996. Not too worried about the technology aspect of installing the upgrade kit, but just wanted to evaluate if it is worth it doing or not.

Don't replace something just for the sake of replacing it. The failure rate is not as high as many make it out to be. Robin, after you get yours replaced, you can start worrying about an intermix problems or your syncros . OR............you can just drive your car with no worries and whatever happens is going to happen anyway.

No issues with my syncros, my tranny shifts super smooth. Of course I have never abused my tranny, no power or slam shift. Always just a flict of my thumb and two fingers to change gear.

So, why do you think there is a problem with your IMS? Sound like you take care of your cars so why worry about something that has a very low failure rate when there are no signs of a problem?
If it blows, you can always drive the shop loaner.
