Default Couple questions about a 2002 CPO

Hello All,

I purchased a 2002 certified pre-owned 996 from a dealership a 3 weeks back and started noticing a couple of concerns.

First the car sometimes pops out of gear, it only happens with 2nd gear, only when I am not accelerating, and typically within 15 seconds of shifting to second in the first place. Has anyone had any experience with this issue? I searched the interenet and some other car forums (not porsche) said an issue like this could be due to a bent fork, or sync issues. Does that sound accuate?

Also, the oil pressure seems to fluctuate a lot is that normal? The check oil light never goes on, but it fluctuates from 2-5.

Any input would be appreciated,

-Tom

Go to the dealership. You have the CPO. That's great. The 2nd gear pop-out is not uncommon. They will know what to do.

Thanks, I was worried what would be and what would not be covered by CPO.

I just copied and pasted this from the CPO brochure I found. My dealer has been great as long as the item is on the list. And the most important (expensive) items seem to be!

PS: Oil pressure fluctuation is normal. Mine runs 4-5 at 3000 RPM but drops to 2 or so at idle.

Second gear popping out seems to be a 'known' problem with the 996s and your CPO should cover any work to remedy it. As mentioned, oil pressure can be affected by engine rpm, cold vs hot engine temps etc. Nice to know you are covered though.GL

a lot of dealers have denied the 2nd gear popout issue is a fault and claim its due to the car being driven hard/badly so be prepared, you should search for 'second gear popout issue' you'll find a ton of info on it, one guy was starting a class action a little while ago but i think the dealer ended up fixing it

hopefully your dealer will do the honorable thing, being that you only got the car 3 weeks ago i really cant see them saying no, if you had owned it for a couple of years i suspect you would have a battle on your hands

fyi. only way to fix it is a tranny rebuild, costing anywhere from 6-10k

Just got a call from the dealer. He said their tech took it out, was able to replicate the issue. They think that something might be broken under the center console? Estimating cost at $200, and not covered via CPO.

I asked about the transmission, he said, we don't think it is that, but if it was that would be covered by the CPO.

Annoying, the dealership i bought the car from is in CT, I get the car serviced where i live in MA. Frustrating, as I'll have to pay the $200 myself as opposed to getting a CPO car that was not broken.

The are BSing you. There is nothing under the console that would cause it to pop out of gear. If the linkage is out of adjustment, or one of the plastic components is worn then it might be hard to get into gear, but once it is in gear it has nothing to do with popping out of gear. This is a problem internal to the trans. I would tell the dealer to "fix" the problem they see, and if the issue goes away, fine. But if it continues then they should credit the money and fix the trans.

^^^ What he said. I would ask for specifics. Don't feed them any suggestions.

And within just 3 weeks, I would get your salesman involved. Be like, WTF I just bought this car, got a CPO for peace of mind, and now this?

I'm gonna be calling the salesperson tomorrow once they give me an actual idea of what they think is wrong.

I'm beyond frustrated actually, maybe I just put too much faith in a car with a CPO thinking I wouldn't have to deal with this lasagna.

Since getting the car I've had to get a coil replaced (Covered by CPO), which the dealership was my fault for washing the car. They also needed to replace the coolant tank or something (also covered by the CPO).

In 3 weeks I've had to make 2 trips to a dealership and been without my car for 5+ days. Luckily it's a weekend car but still annoying as hell to have to go back and forth like this.

I've been debating selling it back to the dealer (most likely for a loss) and getting a different ride.

you need to find a new dealer for service, saying its your fault that you washed the car on the coil pack job is just plain crazy

Salesman carries no weight at dealership. You have CPO. Speak directly with service manager or GM.

Mention CPO played a major factor in your decision to buy the car.

Remind the SM or GM that the dealership owes you a reaosonable degree of skill, care, and experience in diagnosing and servicing your car and you don't feel like you are getting that kind of service.

Mention you feel like you are a victim of fraud and if the dealership doesn't address your complaints to your satisfaction in a reasonable amount of time you'll feel compelled to file a consumer fraud complaint against the dealer.

For the tranny popping out of gear you have to be able to demo that symptom. Note when it occurs and under what circumstances and be able to reproduce it on demand.

Sincerely,

Macster.
