What would you suggest? The stock one is crap.

Then you got a bad shifter my friend (or possible not stock). The stock GT3 is buttery smooth and the perfect throw. The guy I bought my GT3 from had the SSK in the car and it sucked bad! Way too short and IMHO dangerous on the track. I took it out and gave it to another Rennlister and put in a new stock assembly. It was about $150-200 if I remember correctly. Very easy install as well.

Now the non-GT 996 cars are great with the SSK as the throw is just too long and sloppy. I have it in my CAB and love it.

I put a B&M SSK in my '03 996C2. Pretty easy install. At first I liked the shorter throws and more solid feeling, but thought the feel of the action was just so-so. Now, after about 3k miles, feel has improved and I like it a whole lot.

I think a 997 GT3 shifter is compatible with 996/996GT3.

Take a look:

seems a bunch of people have installed the 997 short shift kit in 996 and are very happy, apparently its a lot smoother than the b&m, personally i like the b&m, someone described it as being like a bolt action rifle, money well spent

I wish I can transplant the shifter on my Accord to my 996! The Honda 5-speed is the smoothest shifter in the world! Too bad it's linked to an enemic engine and suspension.
