The economy vs. the 996
Obviously with the dwindling economy in the U.S., the prices of the 996 have dropped. This is good for buyers, not so good for sellers. What are your opinions as far as when we will begin to see stabilization / increase in asking prices? Do you think it will occur once the economy as a whole has stabilized, or further into the future?
Once I get back from Iraq, I will purchase a 996, and I'd imagine it will still be a buyer's market come the end of '09, I guess i just wanted some thoughts.
And for those interested, really hooked on MY02...meaningful year to me and also the same year the 3.6 was introduced. Now I just have to find "the one."

I think you'll be able to find "the one" at the end of 2009 for a good price.
The drop in 996 prices is partly due to the economy, but also due to the fact that Porsche made many more 996s than they did 993s. The 996 doesn't offer the same level of exclusivity - there are more of them out there. Additionally, the air-cooled 993 is perceived by many (rightly or wrongly) to be the last "real" Porsche 911. As a result, prices are higher. I don't think the 996 will hold prices like that, ever.
I think your best approach is just to find the one you like, buy it and enjoy it. Don't worry about prices dropping.

Perhaps there is an inverse relation to the fact that Porsche keeps increasing the price of repalcement engines and other parts. And you can count on Porsche continuing to raise these prices.

Right, that means it will get to a point where it will be cheaper to just buy a 2nd 996 for spare parts then a replacement engine.

The goal is to only buy gasket sets and rear main seals from Porsche in the future.. We are 50% there now!

Hello,
IMHO, the market has bottomed out for now, and will probably go down again in the late fall, early winter.
I started looking for a car back in December 08. I bought mine in March 09. Due to force of habit, I have been checking prices on a regular basis (Ebay, Autotrader) and it seems that prices have not dropped since March, and may have gone back up. I guess that is to be expected as it is now Cabriolet and sports car weather.
Good luck,
Barry

I think this is kind of like asking when is the right time to buy a home. Truthfully the answer is "whenever you are ready".
When you can afford it, buy the best car, for the best price you can find, and don't look back. When you're behind the wheel, it won't matter if prices go up, down, or sideways...
