I'd love to see a review of warranty companies and warranty contracts by shop owners. Also some good "loophole language" to watch out for.

Most of the testimonials you read are from car owners who either had a claim denied (this company sucks!) or paid (best warranty ever!) both of which are of dubious value.

Also how well the companies deal with Porsche specific issues. The guy who sold me my car had a customer with an aftermarket warranty that tried to make him have his transmission rebuilt by a non-Porsche shop.

I called a local dealer today (in Woodland Hills) to ask about my options in regards to an extended warranty. Read on! It's hillarious!

So a guy picks up, I give him my VIN# and he says that my car is eligible for Porsche Certification at $3K or I could get a 3-rd party warranty.
He notes however, that he is not the specialist in extended warranties and kept my # for the "specialist" to call me.

A while later he calls me and starts giving me quotes for the 3rd party warranty - something like $3.5K for a 2-year warranty and $4.5K for a 3-year warranty.
I asked him about Porsche certification and says that my car is not eligible. After telling him what the previous guy told me (not the price), he asks around and says that it actually is eligible and the price is $3.5K.
I then tell him that the other guy quoted me $3K.
So he goes like... well ok, $3K... if you ask 2 different people... I only sell the 3rd party warranties.

These guys are f*** clowns!
Does anybody know how much Porsche certification ACTUALLY costs?
Thank you!

Yes, up to 8 years old or 100K miles.
Certification is for 2 years or till the car reaches 100K miles.

I was under the impression that Porsche would certify "owner titled" cars in Europe, but not here in the US. I have never heard of an example of that happening here in the US.

I have a letter from my local Porsche dealer offering an "extended service contract", but I doubt it is CPO. They say it can be good for an additional 84 month or 100K miles.

Spoke to my dealer, PCNA requires the dealer to purchase the car, take the car into inventory, complete the inspection checklist and pay for parts and service below for items below threshold, then submit the receipts and checklist to PCNA and pay the certification fee (which is in the 3K range for a 996), and then sell the car to you.

I am reviewing my dealer's third party warranty options later today, just out of curiosity.

LVDell has stated in prevous posts that the warranty from PCNA (not the reconditioning) costs the dealer $1700. That's a nice markup for them in addition to the parts and labor required to meet the guidelines.

The best respondent would be one of our own rennlist guys who works in sales or service at a dealer, I have heard that 1700 dollar number before, but have also heard that for cars no longer under factory it's more expensive, and the 3K number I've heard a lot.

If cars have a minimum of 1 month and at least 1000 miles left on the factory warranty the extended warranty is cheaper. If the car has no time left on the warranty then it is more expensive. The warranty that the Porsche dealers sells is not that comprehensive but it will cover most major components. They will not pay for things like struts, most suspension parts, steering components, a lot of the coolant parts etc. They do cover engine and transmission though. There are different warrantees for different types of coverage, you can get bumper to bumper coverage as well.

I have no warranty and my car is 10 years old. I'm scared about driving it home now!

I'm getting the impression that 996s are blowing up all over the place!

Personally, I'm only interested in a warranty that would cover engine replacement. I'm talking $1000 deductible and covering engine failures--leaks and things I can take care of myself but $15k+ all at once would be a little disastrous.

Any ideas where I could pick something up like that?

On my search for an extended warranty, thus far I have got a number of quotes by Porsche dealerships in Los Angeles.
The underwriter is Fidelity JM&A and for the platinum coverage (which is an exclusionary warranty but it does not cover rubber hoses) I have been quoted by a number of dealers around $4500 for 3 years and around $6000 for 4 years worth of coverage for a 2002 996 Targa with 65K on the clock.
No. 1, do the dealers have any room to negotiate these quotes? No. 2, do you believe it is worth it? No. 3, any further comments?

That is not a bad price if the warranty has no hidden stipulations in it. The top of the line warranty that we sell for a car with your mileage would be $5159.00 for 3 years 36,000 miles. Be careful though because the company we use offers a warrantee with the exact same wording as this one for a lot less money. The difference between the two is that if you have a major repair they will only pay a max of $2500.00 on each repair and there is a deductible for each component repaired. The one we sell will pay up to any amount on any repair, which is a good thing if you are buying an engine or a transmission, and there is one deductible for each repair no matter how many components are involved. Our warranty will also pay the sales tax on teh repair and pay for a rental and a tow.

Just be careful when buying a warranty, because you will find out how good it really is, once you try to use it. I know how good this one is because I have a repair shop and this is the only warranty that I have ever found that paid us what we needed to do the repair.

We have had customers come to us with Fidelis, US warrantey, AAAutowarranty, Carchex, Nationwide, Chrysler Aftermarket, the list goes on and on. They all gave us trouble paying, the customer had to come out of pocket for way more than they expected and none of them paid us to use new OEM parts. Be very careful what you are buying.

I believe Fidelity insurance does not have any limit to the maximum claim that they will be and the deductible is charged per visit.
Doing a quick search, Fidelis and JM&A Fidelity are 2 different issurances.

Any other (tricky) questions I should have answered before making a purchase?
